The Hostelz.com Review
La Casa de Jael is great and its best aspect is the staff. When we stayed there in December 2009, we had an extremely early flight departure, and the lady of the house slept in the entranceway on a couch to see us off!
The Location
Arequipa is a charming city in southern Peru and a hub for many regional buses. The hostel is only two blocks from the main plaza, which is very beautiful, especially at night. The walk from the hostel to the plaza is safe and well-lit down a pedestrian-only shopping street that is quite lively.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one spacious dormitory room with three beds and ensuite bathrooms. The shower is supposed to have hot water (instructions are posted in English), but we couldn't get it to work. There is a TV in the room, which is well-lit and homey.
Common Spaces
This is a very quiet place and you may find, as we did, that you are the only guest. The staff will cook you breakfast in the morning and help arrange tours of the city or to Colca Canyon. The common area has some material about the city but it's not really a place to hang out in.
The building is very secure -- the door at the street is always locked and you must call ahead to be let in when you check in. Afterward you will be given a key to that door, then you walk up the stairs and through the chain gate to the right, where the dormitory room is.
Summary
Overall, we recommend Casa de Jael. We love this little place because of the friendly and helpful staff who immediately feel like family. It is useful to know Spanish, although the staff do speak some English.
