The Hostelz.com Review
City Backpackers is a new entry into the competitive Singapore backpacker market. Located in a quiet neighbourhood, this is not a party hostel but is a very basic place to sleep and wash up.

The Location

City Backpackers is located directly across the street from the Kallang MRT station. Leave the MRT station by Exit A and turn left. When you hit the stoplight, turn right and cross Sims Street. Turn left and cross the street again then turn right. When you cross a cul-de-sac, turn left and walk about fifty meters. The hostel will be on your right immediately next to a prawn mee shop. There is a long stairway up and no lift so beware!

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are two private dorms with four bunk beds (eight beds total) each with a corresponding locker with key. Both dorms can be locked and both have individually controlled A/C and a small couch. Our room has a thoughtfully placed power strip to charge mobiles and laptops.

As for the bathrooms, there is one devoted squat toilet (the one at the far end of the hall) and two combo western toilet/shower/sink rooms. Whatever you bring into the shower will get wet. There's no ventilation fan but a new water heater in shower rooms.

Common Spaces

There are two computers in the foyer that leads to the private dorms. If you bring your own laptop, there is a secured wireless network you can access. Outside, there is a sink, microwave, and small fridge and common area with a couch. There are also bunk beds out here as well, divided from the common area by curtains. These bunks also have lockers like the ones inside the private dorms. A washing machine is available for free use but you need to bring your own detergent.

Summary

City Backpackers is one of the newer and cleaner hostels we've stayed in. The location is great for first-time visitors because of its proximity to the MRT. If you're looking for a basic and quiet place to sleep, this hostel will suit your needs.

1  They touch your personal belongings w/o your permission The common bath/comfort room was very dirty. They moved our things without our knowledge and my wedding ring was nowhere to be found. The owner offered me 200 sing dollars but i declined and decided to pursue with the police investigation.  , Filipino ()
3  Simple, friendly, quiet A nice place to get some rest. Staff very pleasant. I felt the hostel to be somewhat overpriced at $20SD per night compared to other city hostels. The kitchen is limited to hot water, a toaster, and a fridge. The rooms are of varying quality (though all priced the same) and geographically separated from the reception area. This gives the hostel a less cohesive atmosphere. One dorm, room 08, is beautiful with wide windows, a small table to sit at and plenty of space. However, most of the rooms are boxlike without windows, getting stuffy, smelly, and uncomfortable to sleep in particularly if one or more of your roommates has been drinking cheap beer. I would rate this hostel more favorably if the room rates were staggered according to quality.  , United Kingdom ()
3  Good For NonSmokers Thank God they have a no-smoking rule throughout the hostel. It is a hostel that is very recommendable for non-junkies.  , Israel ()
