The Location
Macondo Guesthouse, in the colonial town of San Gil, is located at the top of the hill about two minutes' walk from the main square. It is in a safe area of San Gil and close to bars and restaurants. The bus station is located a five- or ten-minute journey from the hostel and the town centre by taxi.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms have four beds an are quite spacious. The bunk beds are comfortable and clean linen is provided. There are also private rooms and double rooms available. The bathrooms are also kept clean, and there is hot water.
Common Spaces
The courtyard of the hostel is the main hub where travelers socialise, eat, drink, play games, and relax. Facilities provided at the hostel include kitchen, common area, hammocks, internet access. There is no TV but there is a book exchange and information on other hostels in Colombia and travel information to other cities in Colombia. The hostel has a very sociable atmosphere and it's a place where you are very likely to meet other backpackers of all nationalities.
The hostel also acts as a tour agent and can book rafting trips, hydro sliding, paragliding, canyoning, caving, horse riding, and hiking. Trips can usually be arranged for the following day. The owner Shaun and his staff are all very helpful and they will store any valuables for guests.
Summary
This is the only real hostel in San Gil and consequently gets most of the backpackers. It is a well-run, homey hostel with good staff and good opportunity to do activities and meet fellow travelers.

Outstanding Information and Assistance! Shaun and his staff at Hostel Macondo pride themselves on providing information and assistance in the San Gil region -- known for adventure activities -- and onward to other parts of Colombia. Bus schedules and prices, seasonal availability, recent comments from the road -- you really don't need a guide book, simply spend a few nights at this hostel and the rest of your journey will be easily mapped out! Most travelers linger in San Gil for longer than anticipated -- it is a perfect little Colombian town that always seems active and alive! — Paul Thompson , USA (2010-03-15)

A quality hostel in a fun town I had a great time here at the Macondo guesthouse. Shaun and the other employees are super accessible and help out with arranging activities, explaining the local culture, helping out with transportation. You certainly feel welcome, and are sure to meet some fun backpackers! Thanks Shaun and Co. for a great experience. — Kevin Goulding , USA (2009-07-28)
