Townside Hostel Bremen is a nice little hostel that immediately strikes you as friendly, cosy, and comfortable -- it can certainly be recommended for a city break in Bremen.
The Location
The Townside is a little further from the main town centre than some of the other hostels in the area, however it is still within walking distance of the train station and the city's excellent tram system means this is no great problem. The tram network also covers the airport, making it easily reached from here also. It is located in a lively cafe and bar area, making it a good spot for a good time.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The Townside has a selection of mixed, single sexed, dorm, and private rooms, all of which are extremely clean. The dorms have bunk beds numbering four to seven and the rates reflect the number of people you are sharing with. If you don't bring your own linen, you can rent sheets. There are lockers but there is an extra charge for these also.
Given its close proximity to nightlife it shouldn't come as a surprise to find people rolling into the dorms at all hours (particularly at weekends), which may disturb the sleep of someone there for a quiet stay. Another disturbance could be the trams that pass frequently from early in the morning until late at night and the loud passersby on the street outside, although these are not tremendously loud and should only be considered an inconvenience for particularly light sleepers (and given the comprehensive nature of the tram system it is likely these would be heard from other hostels in the city also).
Shower and toilet are shared between the rooms on the floor and are separate from the dorm. They are typically very small but sufficient, though there could be a bit of a wait at busy times as there is only a single shower and toilet on the floor.
Common Spaces
The hostel boasts a clean kitchen with plenty of cooking utensils and plates, mugs, cutlery to supply its guests. There is a dining area next to the big window overlooking the street, which adds a nice cafe-feel to it and makes this one of the nicest features of the Townside. There is a couch and small book collection, including a book exchange, here too, although both of these are small given the capacity of the hostel. Smokers have three small balconies from which to smoke (the hostel is no smoking inside). Laundry and internet facilities are also available. The hostel has a friendly atmosphere but although it runs pub crawls on Thursdays and music nights on Fridays, it is not itself a party hostel, however you do not have to go too far outside to find the party atmosphere.
Summary
A cosy little town hostel in Bremen city, the Townside is a pleasant base to explore the area or a handy stopover for the nearby airport.
