COUNTRY OVERVIEW
Ski or hike in the Bjelasnica Mountains; go rafting on the Una river; visit ancient castles and medieval cities; see the amazing Kravica waterfall; windsurf on Lake Busko; drink fine wines; eat apple cake and whipped cream. Situated between Croatia and Serbia, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures. Sarajevo, the capital, has been an important trading centre for centuries; the historic town of Jajce, beautifully set above the Pliva and Vrbas rivers, was the residence of the last Bosnian kings; Fojnica, at the foot of the Vranica Mountains, is renowned for its thermal springs and spa facilities. A nation about half the size of Portugal, tiny Bosnia & Herzegovina is a natural wonderland packed with variety. There are emerald-green river canyons, snow-covered peaks, rolling green pasturelands and there is even a small slice of sunny coast along the Adriatic in the south.
