Description
Rates are very affordable and start at PHP 325 a night (that's less than USD 10). This already gets you a dorm bed, closet space, and use of the common area with television, kitchen and lounge. Accommodations get better - that is, bigger beds, more spacious living space, and air-conditioning and private baths in some rooms -as rates go higher. But then again, Friendly's Guesthouse don't really get anywhere near mind-bogglingly exorbitant rates. The highest you'll ever pay for a Friendly's Guesthouse accommodation is PHP 1,690, and that's already for four people. Clearly, as the affordable alternative, there's nothing like Friendly's Guesthouse.
But then again, rates aren't the only main draw of Friendly's Guesthouse. If anything, as attractive as the rates are, these play second fiddle to the incomparable service and fun that the Manila hostel offers. Friendly's Guesthouse is unique such there is a communal feel about the place, which you'd sense the minute you set foot on it. Benjie, the owner and manager, is a gracious host. Some may even think of him as a tour guide of sorts, good-heartedly taking his guests to the different curio spots in Manila, be it the nearby flea market, the barbecue/ bar next door, or the wet market where you can have the vendors cook you fresh and awesome Filipino dishes. There are wine and cheese nights every other weekend. And, Filipino world music bands grace the terrace with their drum and song on occasion.

The location is good, in Malate around all sorts of cafes, restaurants, a nice shopping mall, and of course the seedy bars, KTV's and dancing girl places that seem to attract the backpackers. There is a decent lounge area that seems to be good for meeting other travelers, and the price is cheap for the shared rooms. They also do a good job about warning travelers about potential dangers of Manila.
