The Hostelz.com Review
Wombat's City Hostel Vienna - The Base is located in the neighbourhood of the Vienna west station. This chain hostel is nicely decorated and organised, and you get a free welcoming drink when you check in. However, this hostel tends to charge you extra on top of the bed. They promote the breakfast that actually comes with a cost and when you check in, charge for using laundry, and have a private bar selling drinks and so on. And they even charge you for using their computer. But they are all reasonably priced, so treat all these as tips if you like to.
The Location
This hostel is within walking distance from the west station, but this is not to be mixed up with another Wombat's hostel five minutes from the station. You need to keep on walking for another five minutes, turn right, and walk to the end of the street before you can find this hostel. If you plan to stay in the city for a few more day, you may be tired of the long travel time before you reach the city centre (area I) and all the tourist spots. If not, proximity to the train station is definitely a plus of this hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Rooms are acceptable, with adequate facilities. In-room lockers, door locks, in-room bathrooms, and even hangers are available. Bathroom is clean, beds are bunk beds.
Common Spaces
They've got a bar and a restaurant, definitely sufficient common space to hang out. (And so it ensures when you want to sleep, the social people won't be staying in rooms being noisy.) The bar, where you redeem your welcoming drink, is open late (and there are not other bars nearby). The drinks are reasonably priced, you will definitely prefer it to going out. The restaurant is for breakfast, and is right next to the bar. This hostel is very conscious about needs of backpackers.
Summary
This is a chain hostel in which you can find everything you need -- nice staff, nice facilities, and nice people.

Awesome! This hostel is just awesome. Everybody is very helpful; you get a free drink upon checking in; the breakfast is complete, delicious and cheap. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The location were perfect: near a principal street, near the train station, there were a lot of stores by there; I walked into town almost all the time because train is necessary just to go to some places. I really recommend this hostel!!! — Juliana , Brazil (2012-01-03)

Always great! Great place, nice staff, awesome facilities and always great atmosphere. This one has a nice location. Clean bathrooms and rooms. Highly recommended! — Adriana TR , Brazil (2009-06-28)

Brilliant! this hostel is immaculate! the rooms are spacious and there are free lockers. the beds are solid and comfortable. rooms and bathrooms are kept very clean all the time (never seen a hostel that clean before). staff are helpful and friendly. the hostel bar (with sun terrace) is great and drinks are reasonably priced. if you're visiting vienna, wombat's is definitely the perfect place to stay! — Judith , Switzerland (2009-04-14)

Clean! Clean and nice. Staff is not exactly friendly, but that didn't matter. Lockers are spacious and free. Breakfast is so not worth it. — Ellie , USA (2008-08-25)

Very social and fun This hostel is a party hostel; the bar is awesome (1 Euro beers during Happy Hour!) and you get a free drink upon checking in. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and I felt safe at all times. The only downside is that there was only one outlet in our room, which was pretty inconvenient, but other than that, the place was fun and accommodating! — Nicole , USA (2008-06-13)

Clean, fun, and decent location. Helpful staff. Big with lots of beds. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Pub is great! Access to internet (but it's a bit expensive). Minutes from Westbahnhof and a great shopping district. It was surprisingly quiet at night and I was able to get two very good nights of sleep. The bathrooms were immaculate. I would stay here again. — Phil , USA (2007-10-09)

Awesome! Wombat's is the best hostel I have stayed at. The place was completely spotless, the staff was enthusiastic and helpful, and the bunk beds were solid. No flip flops were required in the shower, and having a four-person room with a bathroom was wicked. The bar was pumping at night, drinks were reasonably priced (although cheaper at a few places), and the internet was also pretty cheap. Breakfast, although not included (3.50 euro), was fantastic -- the cappuccino machine was a welcome change from instant coffee. Another nice touch is that they have a metal door that they shut on the ground level at night, to seal off the sounds from the bar from the rest of the hostel. Wombat's also provided an awesome map of Vienna with history, attractions, and restaurants too. Eat at Pizza Mafiosi for giant pizza and 0.5L of beer for 5 Euro! — James , Australia (2007-06-19)

Wombats wasnt a bad hostel but it wasnt anything out of the ordinary. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and modern (apart from the creaky and rather battered bunk beds). It is a fair distance from the train station and the bar doesnt open until 6 p.m.! Not bad but overrated. — Penny , Sydney (2007-04-23)

Stayed at the munich wombats just nights before vienna but the vienna location was amazing (may 2006). i had the most fun at this hostel then i did anywhere else in europe, although we had some trouble finding it and it's a bit of a walk from the train station. fellow hostelers were fun and always up for a good time. a party hostel and an awesome place to stay. — Hayley , Canadian (2007-04-12)

Ever been somewhere that was fine really, but it just didn't have a good vibe about it? This is exactly that, the rooms are clean but our shower didn't work properly, but the staff and the whole place just didn't have any kind of 'wow' factor about it. It's ok. — Olipom (2006-08-13)

I stayed here in May '06 and was impressed with the facilities and atmosphere of Wombats. Location was a bit of a walk from the Westbahnhof (the new Wombats won't have this problem) but overall, a great hostel. Great bar with cheap drinks, great social vibe. Staff were helpful. Would stay here again. — G Lim (2006-08-08)

Anyone who says this place is dirty is obviously some sort of germophobe. I would've eaten off the shower floor -- and in a hostel, that says something! The bar is tons of fun too, and I even became friends with a couple of the staff members. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone. — Canadian gal (2006-04-11)

Spotlessly clean, ultra modern, cool (not to mention cheap) bar, no problems finding somebody to hit the town with, staff efficient and quite friendly. Do note it's not in the nicest of neighborhoods around the Westbahnhof. (Don't let that stop you, it's still quite safe, just be prepared to walk past some dodgy-looking characters, especially at night.) — Imogapils (2005-10-03)

Nice people, the right environment. A small (4 people) dorm with ensuite bathroom was really nice and good to catch some sleep. Really clean. — Lmalmeida (2005-08-26)

This is a GREAT hostel. Run really well by nice people and it is very welcoming, clean and social. The only bad thing about it was the location. It was quite a walk from the subway station and at night, coming back from sightseeing, it was a bit sketchy, but if you're travelling with a group this shouldn't be a problem. — Anonymous (2005-07-26)
