The Hostelz.com Review
Wombats is definitely a party hostel - on arrival you get a voucher for a free beer in the bar (albeit a small 250mL one). It is within walking distance of Wien Westbahnhof station, although getting to the heart of Vienna realy requires a tram or u-bahn ride.

It is big and somewhat institutional, but compared to other hostels of this size it is quite efficient. There is no kitchen but each dorm room has its own ensuite bathroom. The Australian theme is a little out of character for Vienna but helps to encourage a friendly atmosphere.

It's a good value at €16/night and the bar often spills out into the reception area on busy nights because of the cheap drinks. It is kept very clean and claims to have won the "Cleanest Hostel in the World 2003" award - and it deserves this accolade, although when the bar closes the ground floor can get a little messy.

Vienna has a reputation for being expensive and sophisticated - it is both, and to get to know it properly takes more than a few days. A real highlight is the heurigen (wine taverns) in the hills. There are lots to choose from at Grinzing - get the u-bahn from Westbahnhof to Heiligenstadt and then get a bus or tram.

Brilliant!
this hostel is immaculate! the rooms are spacious and there are free lockers. the beds are solid and comfortable. rooms and bathrooms are kept very clean all the time (never seen a hostel that clean before). staff are helpful and friendly. the hostel bar (with sun terrace) is great and drinks are reasonably priced. if you're visiting vienna, wombat's is definitely the perfect place to stay!

Clean!
Clean and nice. Staff is not exactly friendly, but that didn't matter. Lockers are spacious and free. Breakfast is so not worth it.

Very social and fun
This hostel is a party hostel; the bar is awesome (1 Euro beers during Happy Hour!) and you get a free drink upon checking in. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and I felt safe at all times. The only downside is that there was only one outlet in our room, which was pretty inconvenient, but other than that, the place was fun and accommodating!

Clean, fun, and decent location. Helpful staff.
Big with lots of beds. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Pub is great! Access to internet (but it's a bit expensive). Minutes from Westbahnhof and a great shopping district. It was surprisingly quiet at night and I was able to get two very good nights of sleep. The bathrooms were immaculate. I would stay here again.

Awesome!
Wombat's is the best hostel I have stayed at. The place was completely spotless, the staff was enthusiastic and helpful, and the bunk beds were solid. No flip flops were required in the shower, and having a four-person room with a bathroom was wicked. The bar was pumping at night, drinks were reasonably priced (although cheaper at a few places), and the internet was also pretty cheap. Breakfast, although not included (3.50 euro), was fantastic -- the cappuccino machine was a welcome change from instant coffee. Another nice touch is that they have a metal door that they shut on the ground level at night, to seal off the sounds from the bar from the rest of the hostel. Wombat's also provided an awesome map of Vienna with history, attractions, and restaurants too. Eat at Pizza Mafiosi for giant pizza and 0.5L of beer for 5 Euro!

Wombats wasnt a bad hostel but it wasnt anything out of the ordinary. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and modern (apart from the creaky and rather battered bunk beds). It is a fair distance from the train station and the bar doesnt open until 6 p.m.! Not bad but overrated.

Stayed at the munich wombats just nights before vienna but the vienna location was amazing (may 2006). i had the most fun at this hostel then i did anywhere else in europe, although we had some trouble finding it and it's a bit of a walk from the train station. fellow hostelers were fun and always up for a good time. a party hostel and an awesome place to stay.

I stayed here in May '06 and was impressed with the facilities and atmosphere of Wombats. Location was a bit of a walk from the Westbahnhof (the new Wombats won't have this problem) but overall, a great hostel. Great bar with cheap drinks, great social vibe. Staff were helpful. Would stay here again.

Anyone who says this place is dirty is obviously some sort of germophobe. I would've eaten off the shower floor -- and in a hostel, that says something! The bar is tons of fun too, and I even became friends with a couple of the staff members. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Spotlessly clean, ultra modern, cool (not to mention cheap) bar, no problems finding somebody to hit the town with, staff efficient and quite friendly. Do note it's not in the nicest of neighborhoods around the Westbahnhof. (Don't let that stop you, it's still quite safe, just be prepared to walk past some dodgy-looking characters, especially at night.)

Nice people, the right environment. A small (4 people) dorm with ensuite bathroom was really nice and good to catch some sleep. Really clean.

This is a GREAT hostel. Run really well by nice people and it is very welcoming, clean and social. The only bad thing about it was the location. It was quite a walk from the subway station and at night, coming back from sightseeing, it was a bit sketchy, but if you're travelling with a group this shouldn't be a problem.

The best hostel I stayed at. The Wombat was awesome, with great staff, a cool hostel bar and the rooms were nice and clean. It was great having a private bathroom in your room. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. This is the hostel that we judged all of our others by.

Wombats had great facilities and was quite clean but definitely not the best hostel I have stayed at in Europe. The staff weren't friendly, one even to the point of being rude, and they didn't explain where anything was. They didn't even tell you what floor the room was on. Also, they allow smoking in the reception area, which I thought was quite disgusting when you can already smoke in the bar, or outside. Not a good first impression when you walk in.
