A jewel in the crown of sleepy Tha Khek, Thakhek Travel Lodge houses all sorts of accommodation options, from a large airy dormitory to the more expensive tastes.
In the huge, wooden building, the dorm contains about ten beds, and whilst it could be a little cleaner, the beds are reasonably comfortable and the price is good. The bathrooms, however, are in need of a spruce-up, and the showers in particular are quite dirty. The place does ooze charm, though, and the various common areas provide plenty of places to relax. At the night, the outdoor garden setting is great, and there's even sometimes a fire to gather round and share tales with other travelers.
If you're interested in doing the increasingly popular yet hair-raising motorbike loop around the area, this is the place to get the info. A huge book filled with travelers' info on the route is mandatory reading to find out about road conditions, restaurants, and accommodation on the way.
One of the only downfalls is that the travel lodge is not centrally located. All the tuk tuk drivers will know where it is, however, and it should be about a ten-minute ride from the bus station. It's also just down the road from the market. Overall it's a great place to stay, although just a little bit more effort would make it fantastic.
