The Hostelz.com Review
The Melting Pot Hostel Tarifa is well located in a quiet town of twenty thousand people, a short ferry ride away from Morocco. A famous destination for kite surfers and nature-lovers alike, the hostel hosts such like-minded travelers, making for a cool and hip mix of stories and conversation. Breakfast -- all-you-can-eat toast, butter, jam, coffee, tea, and milk -- is included. Staffers are well informed and easy to approach.

The Location

Melting Pot is located minutes away from Tarifa's tourist information office and within short walking distance of the ferry terminal. The beach is simply a seven-minute walk and a grocery is just around the corner. There is free street parking. Overall, the atmosphere of the town and hostel are relaxed and unhurried. Lovely beach sunsets and sights of the African coast are readily available.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are mixed-sex double bunks with secure lockers. Windows open and permit lots of natural light. Beds are comfortable but strangely like Melting Pot's Malaga location -- there are hairs from past guests clinging to linen, which is a bit gross. The bathrooms are clean and well supplied, however, and showers are hot, though pressure can be mixed.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is spacious enough and well equipped with four stovetop burners, a microwave, toaster, and plenty of good cookware and dishware. A refrigerator is available and there is a nice countertop for food preparation. Nearby a table provides good room for meals, but a full house might require you to eat in the lounge, which is also comfy and spacious with sofas and smaller coffee tables. Upstairs is a small balcony for hanging out and shooting the breeze. There is only one internet machine for guests and it is very slow; Wi-Fi is swift, go figure.

Summary

Away from the hustle of cities, Tarifa's Melting Pot Hostel is cool break from the rush. The people of the town are relaxed as are other travelers, which makes this an ideal bungalow-style retreat. The hostel is a good staging area for a Moroccan trip or merely a two-day stopping point of a roadtrip. Either way, it won't disappoint and is worth the excursion.

1  Age Limit I made a reservation for the hostel, and I later found out that they have an age restriction and my 17 year old sister could not stay there. They refused to give me a refund and would not change the misleading information. BE VERY CAREFUL CHOOSING THIS HOSTEL!  , USA ()
2  Very rude staff and overpriced rooms The hostel was very clean, it has a nice lounge and kitchen area. I think the bad outweighs the good. There's only one bathroom with shower shared among ten people (possibly more). I don't know where Melting pot finds its staff, but customer service is obviously not their strong point. The one with long hair and glasses and a really deep voice had a huge chip on her shoulder. Having arrived in tarifa a day early, we stayed a night in a pension down the road, triple room with bathroom was cheaper than us staying in a five-bed room. Also there seems to be a family with a baby living in the hostel, so no noise after midnight is strongly enforced. it's good if you plan on going to bed at midnight every night. I'd book a stay elsewhere next time!  , Australian ()
5  The best hostel ever! Clean, cozy, homey hostel. Extremely helpful and friendly staff, very good vibe. Nice lounge, fully equipped kitchen, nice and comfortable dorms. So nice that you won't leave! If you are going to Tarifa, this is the hostel to go.  , french ()
