The Hostelz.com Review
Skanstulls Vandrarhem is a new hostel, so the staff is very friendly and everything is clean and nice (you feel like you're in an Ikea showroom), but they are very new on the business so they have a mess with the room keys. If you arrive after 8 p.m., you have to call and wait about five minutes until they come and check you in.

The Location

The location is quite good -- they are in the central part of Stockholm -- but you still have to take the underground from the center to Skanstulls station (about three stations). The hostel is just one block from the underground station. The neighborhood has some typical Swedish houses to admire as well as some nice restaurants, and the area is calm. Within walking distance, you can reach the port where the cruises arrive.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Almost all rooms have door locks and the lockers are outside the room. All beds are new and each has its own lamp. They are very clean. Each room has a table with chairs. The windows are quite small, and there's the option of a private room -- with or without window, this one is a good deal, because it's the same price of two beds in a dorm.

This hostel is full of toilets -- on every corner you find one, with their own sink, liquid soap, and paper towel. They're very clean! The showers have a big space to change with a sitting area with hooks for your clothes. It includes a hairdryer. The showers are communal with no curtains between them.

The dining room is the only common space available. It is at the entrance of the hostel (obviously next to the kitchen) and there's always someone there dining, planning the next day, or talking. This common room gives a good opportunity to have a good chat. Some of the rooms are very near this dining room so if you don't like the noise too much, try to get a room far form there. The kitchen is small but very clean, with all the appliances. Tea and coffee are free. Theres a small area where books can be borrowed, but no area for reading them, except for the dining/common room.

Summary

It's a great hostel -- very clean, friendly people, not little but still feels cosy. The staff will recommend places to eat or go for drinks. Three hundred meters outside the hostel there's a coffee shop that has a deal with the hostel. It's really nice and a good deal in Stockholm.

4 Good base for exploring Stockholm
I stayed the the twelve-person dorm. The beds were very very comfortable (non-squeaky). Small lockers for personals. Common kitchen and dining area well equipped plus free pasta, tea, and coffee was a positive. The showers were clean but not great, had to hold the shower head and curtains were very flimsy. Staff weren't rude but weren't outgoing either. Free internet and plenty of computers. A half hour walk from Gamla Stan allowed me to get to know the real (suburban) Stockholm. It was very close to Skanstull train station, which was great for travel to and from the Stockholm Sentral. Quite pricey, but everything is in Stockholm.
