The Hostelz.com Review
You can't beat Cuba Hostel for location in St. Petersburg! It's clean and big, and there's a bar upstairs that can get pretty rowdy.

The Location

Cuba Hostel is about two blocks from the Nevsky Prospect metro station. It´s right next to the Kazan Cathedral and mere blocks from the Church on Spilled Blood and the Hermitage. The door is well labeled -- you can't miss it. It is right next to a red London-style telephone booth and a bar called The Office. The staff has to buzz you up every time you want to come in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are bright and clean, with big windows. It's all bunk bed-style, although private rooms for smaller groups are available. There are lockers. There's also an office for left-luggage if you arrive early or depart late. The bathrooms are kind of a strange setup. The rooms and toilets all circle a small kitchen area, with table. So from the toilet, which is quite cramped, you cross the kitchen table area and stand there -- sort of in the middle of the room -- to brush your teeth or wash your face. There are three showers per floor -- these are quite hot, which is great. Each shower is a separate mini room with a small changing area inside, with hooks for your stuff.

Common Spaces

There's a computer and a TV with movies. There's also a big bar area upstairs for getting your fill of vodka, in true Russian tradition. The bar area and stairwell are pretty smoky, like everything in Russia, but the rooms are not. There is a staff person at all times at the front desk.

Summary

In summation, this is a good value place to be in St. Petersburg. Staying here gets you in the heart of the city at a reasonable price and the amenities are livable. You're sure to meet other travelers here as well.

4  Great! I stayed in this hostel for nine nights in a room for ten people. The hostel's location is really very central, it's just behind the Kazanysky sobor and less than one hundred meters from Nevsky prospekt. There is a supermarket not far from it (on Sennaya square). It's pretty easy to find, they give you detailed information about it's location. The hostel itself is rather big, it has two floors, each with a kitchen (with pans, plates, and stuff), about five or six rooms, and three showers. The staff speaks English. They have a rather cosy common room. The whole place is kept clean. Once in a month they organize "vodka drinking party." The atmosphere is ok, not to noisy, but not dull. The only thing we didn't like is that we had to wait for two hours to get in our room and you have to leave a deposit if you want to use the lockers. In conclusion, this is a real hostel, with all the facilities one hostel should have, but for those who travel on a shoestring budget -- isn't possible to find a cheaper accommodation in St Petersburg.  ()
5  Everything you need this hostel is everything you need. friendly and helpful staff, good place to find information, cosiest beds, functional kitchen, perfect location.  , slovenia ()
2  One of the worst hostels I stayed in, but very good location The location of the hostel is great -- very central and there is free Internet. It is not very clean (dorms and bathroom) and it is very noisy, especially for the four dorms next to the kitchen where there is loud music until 2 a.m. The sheets were too short to cover the whole bed.  ()
5  This hostel is incredibly friendly and welcoming and lies at the very heart of St. Petersburg, just off Nevskii prospekt, behind Kazan Cathedral. Modern and fresh, it has a decent kitchen and entertainment with DVDs if you're bored of wandering the streets of beautiful Piter. Run by young staff with an interest in you and the world, it is a refreshing change to the level of hospitality you might in other more expensive establishments in Russia! It's cheap, central, clean, and friendly -- what more could you want?  , England ()
