The Location
The Fireweed Hostel is located in the heart of Field, a small town with a population of around three hundred. Just off the Trans Canada Highway (Number 1), across the river, and to the right you will find this warm, home-like hostel. There are a couple of restaurants no more than a minute away on foot, as well as a small grocery store that is bustling in the high season. There is a adequate parking located next to the hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are four dorm-style rooms at the Fireweed Hostel. Each room has four beds (two bunks per room). Some of the rooms are male only and others for females. There are pull out storage spaces underneath the bed which can be secured with a padlock, which cost extra. There are cubbyholes and coat racks on the wall in each room. The beds are furnished with clean linen and they are very comfortable for bunk beds. Each traveler is given a room key that opens not only his room but a heavy and solid door at the top of the stairs and a similar door to the common area. There are four half-baths located adjacent to the rooms. Two bathrooms with shower and sink and two more bathrooms with toilet and sink. Neither type of room is particularly big, but the shower room has enough room to change in. Also, the bathrooms are very nicely furnished -- nicer than most we have seen in people's homes.
Common Spaces
Just inside the main entrance of the hostel is the lobby, where a coin operated computer is available as well as the check-in desk. If one continues through the hall to their right, they come into the common room. It is both large and welcoming. There is a large L-shaped sofa and chairs in the den section. To the left of the fireplace are tables and chairs, mostly used for eating. There is an LCD TV mounted on the wall for this area. The kitchen is, as the rest of the house, brand new and it shows. Almost any type of pot and pan you could need as well as good appliances are available. There is a freezer for visitor use located downstairs, although there is also fridge space in the main refrigerator. We consider this a friendly but calm hostel. It is easy to relax and meet new people.
Summary
If you or anyone you know is looking for a fantastic hostel to stay at in the Yoho National Park area, direct them to Fireweed Hostel. For the money, you cannot ask for anything more. It is not only clean, well furnished, and safe, but within a short drive to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the entire world. Should we ever visit the area again, we won't bother looking for any other place to stay.
