The Cosmopolitan Hostel opened its doors in March 2007 so is still shining and sparkling with brand new mattresses and rugs. From the outside, you wouldn't think this, as the building looks a bit tired and rundown, but looks can be deceiving. Currently there is no sign or building number outside so it's very easy to miss, but just look for the big building next to the 7-11.
Inside you'll step straight into the reception area with the large lounge to your right and everything else to your left. The lounge is split in two, with the TV area set up with two comfortable couches in front of a large, flat-screen TV (with satellite). Perhaps as the hostel fills up this layout will change to accommodate greater numbers. In the other half is the computer table with hi-speed internet, currently free. The outside wall of this room is just windows lined with potted plants, giving you a great view of the city and bustling market below.
Down the corridor there's two dorms -- two girls' and one mixed (a second mixed dorm will be added). The girls' ten-bed dorm is so kitsch it's cool. Absolutely everything is pink, except for the white teddy bear on the shelf and the Mills and Boon-style books in the bookcase. Once the pinkness grows on you you'll love this room. The twelve-bed mixed dorm is a more natural mix of colours.
The dining room and kitchen combined are large aand well-equipped. Free tea, coffee, and drinking water are available all day and breakfast (bread and spreads) is included in the price. At the very end of the corridor the elegant water fountain announces the entrance to the unisex bathrooms, which have four western toilets (two with padded seats!) and three showers, all with hot water.
The location is very good, and though not near China Town, it's very easy to get anywhere as the Chow Kit monorail stop is around the corner. You can also walk to the Petronas Towers (Trade Centre) from here. This hostel is still too new to have a specific atmosphere but the owner is so easygoing that it's sure to be one of the better ones in Kuala Lumpur.
