This hostel was WONDERFUL. The owner was so sweet — he was booked the next night so he found us another place to stay. It was cheap, very clean, and in the center of everything. I think that at Pension San Jeronimo I slept in the most comfortable bed I have slept in while I was in Spain. There were even free maps provided and travel information. It was quiet (except for the bar below) and had great bathrooms.

Luckily, San Sebastian is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, since you may be doing everything you can to avoid staying in your room if you stay here. Don't be fooled by the pictures provided, since there are a few buildings you can be shuffled into. We booked a double, and got a room with two beds with threadbare sheets, barely enough space around the beds to put our backpacks on the floor, and no window—not even a fan. The room was a coffin. It was broiling hot and humid and smelled of food, and there was no fresh air to be had. We seriously thought we would suffocate during our sleep (what few hours we could get with the noise through the paper-thin walls and the air of death around us). And to make matters worse, the room was more expensive than any other we stayed in while we were in Spain, and it was by far the most miserable. Do not book with San Jeronimo! Too bad I cannot give it zero stars.

We got stuck at this place after another hostel owner purposefully overbooked as many people as he could and shuffled all of us through a network of pensions, which are operated by rooming people who have been shut out elsewhere. As a result, they charge you what they want with absolutely no regard to the initial price you made a reservation for, or the fact that you made a deposit. We were moved each night we stayed, and as a result wasted half the day just getting to another place to stay. This pension itself was nice, but the owner wasn't willing to negotiate on price. Sure we got a TV and a couch and all that, but who wants it when you're just looking to go to the beach? Beware about staying in this town.
