The Hostelz.com Review
1770 Southern Cross Backpackers is a great place to stay -- the overall atmosphere is relaxed. The hostel is set on acres of land, meaning that there is room for a pool, a large pond, and plenty of green space to chill out. The only thing in the hostel that is not relaxed, however, is the check-out time, which is 9 a.m. -- no lay-ins on check-out day! If you are getting a late bus, however, they do allow you to spend the day at the hostel and use the facilities for a small fee, which is very handy.
The Location
The hostel is about five minutes' drive from the main shops of 1770 and the bus dropoff if using the Greyhound. A shuttle bus is provided so guests don't have to walk and this bus service leaves every two hours in addition to the Greyhound bus times. The town is pretty small with not a lot in it, however there is still plenty to do. Through the hostel you can organise a surf lesson for a price (there are large group sizes but still a fun morning!), kayak, 'Scooteroo,' and bicycle tours of the town are also available. The beach is around ten minutes' walk from the shops and is quite small but pleasant.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Small dorms (four or five share) and private rooms are available at the hostel for reasonable prices. The rooms are all located in separate log cabins (named after countries) within the large grounds. There is a no-key policy in the hostel (this sounds a bit risky but we didn't experience any trouble and you are able to lock the door from the inside when in the room).
Some of the dorms and private rooms have en-suites however our room used the shared facilities. There are unisex showers (all individual cubicles) and then a set of toilets per sex. The showers are rarely busy due to the en-suites in some rooms, however, we would advise using the shower when no one else is, as this is the only way to ensure a good shower! If two or more showers are in use at the same time, the shower doesn't work properly and the temperature goes from ice cold to boiling in seconds.
Common Spaces
The hostel kitchen is quite small but well equipped with plenty of storage space in the fridge and on the shelves. There is a toaster, microwave, and five-burn hob. Breakfast is provided each morning (toast and cereal plus tea and coffee) between 7 and 9 a.m.
The hostel bar has a nice atmosphere and serves (comparatively) cheap drinks as well as a very limited selection of food. There is also a pool table and free ping pong and foosball tables are provided in the bar.
Summary
Overall we enjoyed our stay at Southern Cross Backpackers and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit 1770 or simply wanting to relax for a few days during their travels. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the surroundings are beautiful.

through my travel in australia and new zealand this was absolutely the best hostel i have stayed in. we stayed longer than intended because you cannot just leave the place without having stayed there for a few days. awesome place. — anita (2007-03-21)

I've stayed at more than a hundred hostels over twenty-four countries so far and this hostel was simply the best ever. It's just like a five-star resort. Incredibly spacious, surrounded by lovely gardens and it even has its own lake with a boat on it. And there's also a great swimming pool to die for. Owners are so friendly and helpful. This is the best kept secret of Australia. — Joe the Korean guy (2007-03-15)
