The Hostelz.com Review
Gracelands is a pleasant little hostel in the Surry Hills neighborhood of Sydney. It feels more like staying in a large share house than in a hostel, and the majority of the people who stay there seem to be long-termers. Although it is located on a busy street, the vibe at Gracelands is very chill and relaxed, maybe it's the calming effect of the light blue color of the walls inside and out!

The hostel is clean, quiet, and spacious. The common room is warm and full of big comfy couches, a TV, video games, and an extensive movie and book collection. Internet is available on two computers, but the price is a bit steep. You can also use your own laptop to connect to the internet. There is a relaxing outdoor courtyard area behind the kitchen with chairs and picnic tables. Some rooms connect to balconies and most have a sink somewhere in the near vicinity (sinks tend to be found in weird places, like the hallways or on the balconies, but they are more convenient than having to go to the bathrooms each time you need a sink). The bathrooms are clean -- most of them located out in the courtyard area. But there are some indoor bathrooms that have the things you always wish for (like hooks to put your towel and clothes on -- imagine that)!

The location is very convenient if you're staying long term in Sydney -- right next to a Cole's, and in Surry Hills, a nice but still fairly inexpensive neighborhood of Sydney with lots of cheap eats of all kinds, as well as cool bars and cafes nearby. If you are only in Sydney for a few days, however, the location may seem a little bit far from the central sights. Gracelands is quite far down Cleveland Street, and is about a twenty-five minute walk to Central Station. To get there from Central Station, exit onto Chalmers Street, continue up behind the station past Prince Alfred Park and take a left on Cleveland Street. Cross to your right hand side and keep walking! Gracelands is on the block after the Cole's/Surry Hills Shopping Centre and is very blue, you can't miss it.

Stayed two Months in a Double. Internet Access/Availability -- $5 a week per person. Communal Kitchen, Storage box per person, Fridge space per room/dorm, Utensils provided free of charge and a communal TV/DVD lounge. Work Assistance -- Lots of local contacts (Notice board and personal help). Gracelands is a quiet and friendly hostel located in the Surry Hills/Redfern area of Sydney. Set in an old, three-story house, the location is about ten minutes' walk from Central station, and a nice, leisurely, twenty-five-minute walk right into the heart of the city. For those who aren't of a walking persuasion, the hostel is close to bus stops which will take you right into the city, and Circular quay. The facilities in this hostel are well laid out and cleaned to a good standard everyday. A number of rooms are available from Dorms to Doubles and Twins. The staff members are extremely nice and very helpful in the process of looking for work in the Sydney area. The hostel is close to a number of amenities including lots of Indian restaurants, and the local Coles supermarket is about five minutes' walk down the road.

Good hostel but I wouldn't recommend it for a backpacker looking to meet fellow travellers. We stayed for a couple of weeks when we first arrived in Sydney and while it was very clean, the people staying there seemed to be living there and not into the backpacker scene.

I only intended to stay at Gracelands for a couple of weeks, but I stayed there so long they gave me the job of managing the place. The hostel is clean and it's so close to everything. They are very particular about who stays there and the welfare of their guests. So you are sure you are going to meet nice people. I give Susanne (an experienced backpacker herself) and Buffy the thumbs up for an excellent job done!

Gracelands is my home away from home! When I arrived I intended to stay only a few nights. I ended up staying here for over three months. It's a clean, small hostel in Surry Hills, within walking distance of the Central Station. The owner Susanne and her son Buff are the nicest people I've come across during my travels through Australia!! I felt like I became part of their family. If you come to Sydney and are looking for a place to feel at home, Gracelands is a must-stay!!!
