The Hostelz.com Review
Ostello San Frediano is a huge building on the inside border of the city walls of Lucca. It is the only hostel in town and it is part of the YHA.

The Location

Located within the walls of the historic center of Lucca, the hostel is certainly way more than the five hundred meters from the train station as written in their own description. From the train station, take the front exit and walk towards the city wall that is just in front of you. There you have the first direction sign to get to the hostel. Going into the narrow streets of Lucca, watch carefully for the next signs as they are easy to miss! Locals are willing to help if you get lost like we did.

There are also a few very small buses that can get you almost to the door of Ostello San Frediano if you don't feel like walking. The location of the hostel is excellent, as you are at walking distance to everything that has to be visited or seen in Lucca.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers dorms as well as family rooms. Our dorm had eight average-comfort bunk beds, a personal in-room locker for everybody, and also a small sink in it. The beds are quite close one to the other, so hope you don't have a snoring person next to you! And get ready for some brain activity, because you have to remember how to get to your room. This gigantic hostel looks like a maze if you sleep in the dorms at the other end. The hostel in general is very clean and quiet.

The bathrooms are located usually in front of the dorms, and there are usually two showers per bathroom. Watch out because the bathrooms' door can be locked, so if somebody wants to monopolize the place to take a quiet shower, nobody has access to the other shower, to the sinks, and to the toilet! The showers are hot and pretty clean, but they tend to overfill so that the floor gets damped all over.

Common Spaces

People have access to some huge resting rooms with approximately twenty-five-foot ceilings and couches. There is also a TV room with a few tables, which is also the only place where people are allowed to eat their own food. There is no kitchen where guests can prepare food. The hostel doesn't serve breakfast for free, but they do have a restaurant beside the reception desk where you can buy one or buy a dinner.

Ostello San Frediano is not really a place where you can expect to meet friendly backpackers, maybe due to the size of the building. During our stay, the woman at the reception told us the hostel was full and we barely saw ten people during our stay.

Summary

Overall, Ostello San Frediano is a great place to stay to spend a good time in Lucca, because it is really in the central area of the town. Facilities provided to travelers are of relatively good quality and are definitively adequate for backpackers as well as families.

5 Great, cheap, perfect location!
Lucca is a flat fortified town, so it's an easy walk to the ostello, which is perfectly located to explore the whole place -- and get a quiet sleep! I was there with my brother in june 2007 -- we just showed up, asked for a private room. I think they were all booked, but the very friendly guy at the desk gave us the keys to a dorm all to ourselves, while only charging us for the regular dorm price! Very cool. The place is huge, with many little cozy common rooms to hang out and play scrabble or cards. there is also a TV room with comfy couches. Very clean, solid non-creaky bunk beds, very quiet (thick doors!), big washroom with shower in our dorm, with plenty of hot water. Big lockers to put our stuff in, and the place felt nice and safe. Lucca is wonderful! So much to see, walking the walls in the evenings with the locals and joggers, make sure to climb up the torre Guinigi for great views of the place under the ilex trees. Lots of shops, cheap and expensive/fancy alike. Wonderful experience to see all the locals zooming by on the tons of old bikes barely locked everywhere, a bit à la Amsterdam, from the old dude with his cigarette to the plump mamma in stilettos and faux gold lamé DG bag. Priceless. Lucca is a must-see in itself, but is also very well-located as a base to explore the region -- all the charm of an old town with modern-city comforts!

4 Clean and friendly
We stayed here for two night. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and the people friendly. Lucca is a nice little town. You can't cook your own meal, but you can eat in the hostel. There's a cheap pizza place across the street though (six euros a pizza) and a few nice restaurants in town which we found to be cheaper.

2 About the most unwelcoming and unfriendly place we experienced in Italy. The rooms were nice and clean and the facilities were good. But the atmosphere was very stale. A "hello" from the person at the front desk would have been nice. Even an acknowledgment that we were there could have helped.

5 Its not a forty-minute walk, well maybe if you are a snail. Its about ten minutes -- no hills, easy walk. Showers were fine and didnt leak at all. The dorms were full when i got there, so they used a family room as a dorm for one night, which was great. But the dorms there are also fine.

5 This is a beautiful hostel in a beautiful city. Everyone was very friendly, and it was easy to meet other travellers here. It is a bit of a hike from the train station, but no more than thirty minutes at most, and it's a pretty stroll through the center of the town, with plenty of places to stop for a gelato or coffee. I would definitely recommend this hostel!

4 Be prepared for a good forty-minute walk from train station. Also the food offered is quite bland. However the rooms are very clean and the hostel is centrally located.

4 The hostel had a large common room with a very high ceiling. The rooms were large, and the bathroom was okay, but the showers leaked water everywhere. There is a bus from the train station to the hostel if you don't fancy the walk. The town is very nice and is a good place to stay if you are visiting Pisa.

4 Clean, efficient, and run well. Everything was as advertised. It is on the opposite side of town from the train station, so be prepared to haul your luggage for over half a mile. Still, you get to see the town this way. Across the street and just a few doors down is a nice little pizzeria where you can eat in or order "to go." The hostel's own restaurant seemed a bit pricey. Be sure to stroll along the city wall at night.

4 This hostel is so beautiful!!! But when you try to make a reservation by email, they do not understand you all the time. A bit annoying... But it is recommended to make a reservation in advance, certainly in high season. Rooms are quite spacious, bathrooms certainly!! From the train station you would have no problem to find it! It is a very beautiful building. If you want to stay there, try to get the incredible 2-bedded room (I didn't get it :( unfortunately). Lucca is a beautiful city, close to Pisa (where an international airport is) but a stay of 2 or 3 days is enough.

4 This is a really nice hostel in a lovely picturesque town. I really recommend you visit. Breakfast isn't provided, but that's not really a bad thing, to be honest. ;)

1 Very scary hostel. Right across from the X-rated video store. The receptionist was drunk when we showed up.

3 Nice tidy hostel, although be prepared for 1/2 an hour walk to get to it. Still you see most of Lucca at the same time. The hostel is clean and segregated, although there is a very large common room to relax in. The beds are in 6 bed dorms and the showers seem to be sparsely arranged for the number of people in it. However, the restaurant does some pretty nice food, except if you go for the standard meal which is crap. Overall, pretty average, but nice and clean.
