The Hostelz.com Review
It is a bit of a journey to get there but it is a beautiful island and the hostel has a great view of the water. Near the Naples train station, take a bus to Molo Beverello, the port. From there, take a ferry to Ischia, then take the #1 bus to the hostel. (The bus ride is about half an hour.)

Breakfast and sheets are provided, but the breakfast consists of a packaged bun with jam and a token for the 0.50 euro coffee machine. It is picked up at the front desk between 8 and 10 AM, so most people eat at different times, and therefore breakfast isn't very social.

The hostel is in a well-maintained building with patterned tile floor and a nice big balcony off each room. Each balcony has a table and chairs, and is a beautiful spot for watching the sunset. The hostel is a little noisy, as it is right next to the road. There is a pool (although it wasn't filled at the end of May) and there is a bathroom and shower in each room. The showers have a hot and cold tap, which means that, unlike most hostels, the water is continuous and you can regulate the temperature. The rooms and the bathrooms are quite clean. The common room has a TV and a computer that you can use for the internet.

It is fairly easy to meet people and the balconies are close together so you can socialize with the people in neighbouring rooms. It has a relaxed and fun vacation atmosphere; people traveling to Ischia are often looking for a rest from heavy traveling and interested in lying on the beach.

BE WARNED: There are a lot of bugs, even in the hostel at night everyone gets eaten alive by mosquitoes!

5 Very Good
This was my third time on Ischia and the first time in this hostel. I had a small room on the third floor with a bunk and a single. No balcony, but a huge window onto the sea. The bathroom across the hall was spotless and I had lots of fresh linens. The young man at the desk (Marcello, Marco?) was sorry about the empty pool, indifferent about most everything else, yet helpful when is was seriously demanded. Maybe off-season is the best time to go (Oct.) as it was very quiet. Cappucino good, bread bad. If you go to Ischia, make sure to try to get to the Negombo Spa above Casamiccola. Luxury. Also up in Baia De Sorgeto ask someone about the three sisters restaurant overlooking the sea -- wonderful. The castello tour is fab and there is a cool restaurant at the top.

5 Fiesty teens can ruin anyone's hostel experience, but that is luck of the draw and has nothing to do with the hostel itself...just bad timing. This is one of the best hostels I've stayed in in Italy, mostly because it is affordable, a beautiful building with balconies, and truly close to everything. The beach may seem like a far walk to some, but it is only because you have to descend the maginificently gorgeous hill on which the building is situated. You can easily walk to town if you feel the inclination, and if not, the bus sytem is VERY easy, and runs quite often. I was also disappointed that the pool was not yet filled, but in the end, it forced me to get out and about and go into town...where the people were amazing. The breakfast is machine coffee and a plastic-wrapped pastry, but welcome to budget living in Italy!!! I was addicted to machine cappuccino's as a student at the University of Florence. It's a hostel, not a B&B!

2 I spent three nights in the Il Gabbiano hostel with my father and the time we spent there was nothing short of a nightmare. On paper the place seems very nice. Balconies in every room, swimming pool, and a beach across the street. Somehow we were stuck in a very small room for two with no balcony. The pool had no water, even though it was late June and over 90 degrees, and the nearest beach was at least a 20 minute walk from the hostel. These were the least of our problems, though. On our first night there at around 1:30 in the morning a group of about 12 teens came into the two rooms next to ours and were insanely noisy and rude until 3 a.m. They were screaming and pounding the walls. I walked down and talked to the night desk man and nothing was done. The noise started again at 5 a.m. and they began pounding on our door. I could not communicate with them since I don't speak Italian. I went to walk down to the desk and was hit with balls of wet toilet paper. This time the owner of the hostel was there and after a lot of yelling between him and the teens he kicked them out of the hostel at 7:30. The teens ruined the community bathroom so we were forced to go downstairs to use a different restroom. The hostel owner said that the kids did so much damage that it would cost him more to repair it all then he made from the 16 dollars they had to pay to stay the night. I would not recommend this hostel.

5 The staff were friendly and helpful, the place had a great holiday atmosphere and it was great to relax in. The rooms were nicely decorated with a balcony overlooking the sea. The surrounding beaches are beautiful and only a short walk from the hostel. I had a great time, and loved it.

4 I had a brilliant time at this hostel. Every room has a balcony with a view of the sea. The swimming pool was tiny and you have to wear a swimming cap but with beautiful beaches down the road, you don't really need it. If you have been backpacking for a while it is a good place to relax. The breakfast was nice, a croissant and a hot drink from the machine. I stayed here for 4 days and could have stayed longer.
