The Hostelz.com Review
Hostel Stara Polana is located on Nowotarska Street. From the train or the bus station, walk along Kosiuszki Street until you reach Sienkiewicza Street. When you are at the end of Sienkiewicza Street, turn right towards Nowotarska street.
The hostel is a large villa -- typical Zakopane style, with wooden arches and paneling. Walk to the left to enter. You are greeted by friendly, English-speaking staff at the twenty-four-hour reception area. They will lead you to the lounge area, with a big screen TV, comfortable sofa, and dim lighting. The reception area has one computer with free internet access, a grand piano, and a patio area.
The well equipped kitchen is country-styled -- wood paneled walls and wood furniture make for a very homey feeling. Breakfast is included and you are free to make coffee or tea during the day. The eight-bed dorm has a table and chairs and good-sized lockers to store your backpacks. The beds are a little close to each other, but the decor, with its wooden walls and floor, makes the otherwise typical dorm seem different. The toilets are clean and two are located in the lounge area. There are other toilets and showers. The toilet with adjoining shower is small but clean. Lights in the shower were not working during our stay, but you will have your hot shower. There is an area to stow your ski/snowboards that is kept locked. Overall we had a pleasant experience -- there's good, helpful staff and a homey feel to the place. It is also within walking distance to all tourist areas in Zakopane.

Crowded and disorganized However, traveling in two, in the evening, when we were back to the hostel, there was someone in one of our beds, who did not want to leave. The hostel was so crowded they put people sleeping on the floor and the showers were constantly busy. The following day, breakfast room was crowded, the seats were not enough, and guests devoured the available food. Nevertheless the reception girl did all her best to accommodate and solve people problems though she had not a fluent English. To end, we had insect bites all over our body. An urgent cleansing is due! — pdtboy , Brazil (2009-09-24)
