HI - Alessandria - Santa Maria Di Castello Hostel is located in an old monastery building that was built in medieval times. It is a nice and quiet place to stay but doesn't offer much besides beds and bathroom facilities. However any important infrastructure is within short walking distance.
The Location
The hostel is located in the old town of Alessandria. If you arrive at the train station it is on the opposite side of the old town and a bit tricky to find. In front of the hostel there is plenty of public parking space. The neighborhood seems to be safe. The tourist information of Alessandria, with very friendly English-speaking staff is within the same building. You can find internet access, supermarkets, pizzerias, and all kinds of shops within short walking distance. You get a key for both the room and the main door so you can enter at all times of day and night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms have four beds (single and loft) with good clean mattresses and blankets. Bedsheets are also provided. For each person there is a cupboard with plenty of space and simple locks. The hostel has clean, shared bathrooms (one for both sexes) with showers, water-basins, and water toilets (also for disabled!). The showers are warm and good. Soap or shampoo are not provided. Toilet paper is found in the cupboards inside the rooms. In the rooms there are no washing-basins. If you stay in winter, there are heaters both in the rooms and in the bathroom, but the corridors can be rather cold. Smoking inside the building is of course prohibited.
Common Spaces
In the hostel there are no common spaces and the whole place is very quiet. Breakfast is not provided and
there is no public kitchen. On the aisle there is a slot machine selling coffee, hot chocolate, and biscuits. The reception is in a small office, which has long hours during the week but is closed for most of the day on weekends. The staff are very friendly but speak only little English.
