The Hostelz.com Review
Peniche Backpackers Hostel is a small hostel with a homey feel and atmosphere that is perfect for relaxing amidst the hustle and bustle of traveling.

The Location

Peniche Backpackers is located right in the main town of Peniche, almost opposite the Tourist Information Centre. It is above the Café Nua on the first floor and has a small sign above the door. It is a fifteen-minute walk (at the time of stay they were doing construction on the short cut through the city wall) to the main bus station that has buses from a range of places around Portugal. It is also within a couple of minutes of a small supermarket as well as many shops and cafes. The beach is about a fifteen-minute walk away, which makes it a nice place to get the best of both worlds. Parking is only available in the street. It seems to be a quiet area of town as most of the bars are about a ten-minute walk away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel offers three mixed dorms with four beds dorm as well as two private doubles, one of which can be converted into a twin room. All of the rooms are named and themed around a different country/continent, which adds a nice touch. The dorm rooms contain small, key-safe-type lockers that are great for small valuables but not much else. Also one of the doubles and a dorm room lack an outside window, so you have a window above the door that has to stay open or you would suffocate but at the same time all the noise from the common area funnels into the room, which can be annoying if you are trying to sleep. The private has plenty of hooks and coat hangers as well as a desk and chair, which is a handy touch. The rooms do have locks, but it seems like none of the dorms are ever locked, which does not seem particularly secure -- especially when during our stay a surfboard was stolen form the outside area, which was one story above ground.

There are two bathrooms, which have a shower and toilet -- it isn’t too much of a problem most of the time, as it is quite a small hostel; the showers are quite good. The only problem we had was a random t-shirt left in one bathroom for our whole stay and the paper towel dispenser was not filled up.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a homey kitchen, dining area, and lounge together that makes it easy to socialize with other guests; there is also a small patio area outside. The kitchen is quite small, though, so it can get a little squishy but it does have a hob, oven, fridge, and anything else you really need to cook your own meals. This is also where you can get breakfast, which starts at 9 a.m. and goes until there is none left. It is reasonably basic, though, with bread, jam, and cereals. The lounge has cable TV and a free-to-use computer, which is great for anyone who doesn’t have their own. There is also free Wi-Fi, which was a little sporadic during the stay.

As Peniche is mainly a surf town, you tend to find the hostel is mainly filled with surfers, but they are all friendly, so if you want to just hang at the beach or learn to surf, it is the perfect place; they also offer surfing lessons and hire out wetsuits and surfboards.

Summary

Peniche Hostel Backpackers is great for someone who wants to relax or surf in a quiet surf town and spend the evenings at a small friendly hostel that feels like home.
