The Hostelz.com Review
Located within walking distance from the artistic town of Truth or Consequences, Riverbend Hot Springs Hostel should truly not be missed for its location, atmosphere, open air hot springs, and the kind of people it attracts. The place is run by very friendly, pleasant staff and the owner who also lives in the property. They are constantly interacting with the guests. There is also a place for solitude there, but that place is secret and has to be looked for.

The hostel is located on the banks of the Rio Grande River. There are five public and one private hot tub with different water temperatures including a cold one. Sitting on the hot bath tub, one can view the sun rising on the top of the mountain -- a breathtaking view. At nighttime one can soak in the hot tub while looking at the desert night stars. The hot tubs are open from 8 to 10 a.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m. Each tub is washed and refilled at least once a day.

There is a patio area with lots of tables and chairs for people to sit and talk and a barbecue grille that is used for occasional community dinner. Most evenings one can relax next to the fire listening to the sound of guitar playing by the guests. During the day, one can go for a nice hike/bike ride in the desert -- there are free bikes. Another freebie is the use of the hostel's movie collection. The catch is getting your hands on the only TV -- shared between women's and men's dorms.

The people who are attracted to the place are frequent visitors who mostly come to relax or seek spiritual healing. The place is well-priced which includes soaking in the hot tub plus bed and use of laundry, kitchen, and shower. You can also camp or stay in your RV or car and pay less for your visit.

The facility is clean and maintained by the guests. Most of the regular visitors take the responsibility of keeping the place like their home. Women's dorms have two beds or three beds per bedroom, with stocked kitchen, shared bathroom, and common area. Men's dorm has six beds, stocked kitchen, shared bathroom, and common area. The beds are pretty comfortable. The showers are fine but the female bathroom is too tight and needs some more sitting space. There is a friendly dog that for sure will let every creature know that he is the real owner of Riverbend Hot Springs Hostel. Guest dogs are welcome for an extra fee. Discounts are available for students, AAA members, seniors or military personnel.

This hostel is a true American traveling experience. Don’t miss out.

Let me be the voice of reason. I worked at this hostel three years ago, for a few months. The owners treated me well and when I got a regular job at a hotel they were very flexible. I did see them treat other staff members and guests unfairly. They are good people, but very karmatic. If you cross them you're pretty much out of luck. They do play up the ex-hippie thing and pay the staff nothing other than a bed. The mineral baths are great and if you work for them you have access to the Private bath, which is breathtaking, and empty rooms and trailers to take a private shower, cook a meal, or watch a movie. The staff varies greatly, because you're pretty much a volunteer. Sometimes they have extra work for cash and if you do the housekeeping , people usually leave a few bucks. They are very pro-hosteling and discourage long term guests. They left Hosteling International by choice a few years back simply because the required insurance was too costly. I recommend if you stay here, you rent a cabin or private room. There is only one male and female dorm and some of the staff live there as well. I met a girl while there, who did the laundry and we fell in love. For $20-$40 it's a very good deal. I've only been there in the summer and fall. The town is pretty quiet, especially at night. There a good coffee shop, where people hang out and one good biker type bar downtown and a place called Big a Burger where you get great food and service for not much cash.

I think this place is a big joke. Yes the pleasant feeling of being in a hot spring is wonderful but the energy that the owner and most of staff give out is a scary experience. I felt like I am in a mental hospital with lots of people you can't trust. For example the owners are the big talk on how they are into helping each other and money is not a object but when it comes to it they only see the money. It is so fake that the appearance beauty gets invisible. They are trying hard not to keep themselves as a hostel and want to only be a resort especially for hot mineral water. The staff are mentally out of this world and the irony is that they see people with that bad energy as Massage Therapist. This place is not worth your energy if you want to stay sane. You can stay in motels in town for $25.

I stayed three weeks and loved this place. It was difficult to leave the friendly people...the very gracious helpful staff, the beautiful area, the small town, no congestion reviving environment. The community meals were fun. The not mineral springs sitting on the edge of the Sellpy Rio Grande could not be topped..

A unique experience for anyone looking for the beneficial effects of hot springs. Here, the main hot tub is located just above the Rio Grande River, offering unspoiled beauty and peace. No other place in Truth or Consequences can match the hot springs here. The river is accessible on a low ramp to one side of the hot tub. The low price is incredible for the value received - relaxation, improved health and inner balance. A staff is available at all times to remedy any complaint about the accommodations -- friendly, plesant and obliging. I was such a full-time staff member for 3 weeks in June 2003. I know how anxious everyone is to give top-quality service. A place not to be missed - never to be duplicated!!

Riverbend is just awesome. I was comforted by the warm hospitality of the owners and volunteer staff, and was very much at home. The water is just perfect, and the pools are maintained for cleanliness. The pricing is very fair and extremely reasonable. I met some great people, all with wonderful personalities. I planned on staying one night, and ended up staying four! My travels will definitely include Riverbend for many more stays and soaks. My thanks for accommodating me so personally and gracefully. Much love to you.

We stayed in Room #2, which has two beds, a kitchen (with fridge and stove) and a bathroom. It was very nice and the beds were comfortable enough. They have been building new hot spring tubs which is neat, but their prices have gone up (still it's the cheapest place I could find in the town that includes use of the hot tubs). The river was gorgeous. In town, I recommend eating at White Coyote restaurant — it's mostly vegetarian but delicious and gourmet. Everything is made from scratch including the bread and it was such wonderful food! The prices were pretty good there and I wish the restaurant existed in my city — I would eat there constantly!

I have mixed feelings about this hostel. The hot springs experience at the hostel is awesome. The pools are open from 7-10 a.m. and 7-10 p.m. There are several pools at different temperatures to choose from. And you can also take a dip in the Rio Grande River just a few feet from the pools. The area around the pools is attractive and clean. The pools are drained at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., which keeps them quite clean. There is a nice patio area with tables, chairs and a barbecue grille. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My only suggestion for the hot spring is that it would be nice if the pools were open an hour earlier and an hour later. I enjoy soaking in a hot spring just before sunrise and it is also nice to enjoy the cool night air while soaking a little later into the evening. The town of Truth or Consequences is quite small, but very friendly. If you like New Mexico-style food, there are some great restaurants and the prices are quite reasonable. There are also some interesting galleries and shops in the downtown area (which is within walking distance of the hostel). Be warned though that stores close rather early here. My complaint about the hostel concerns the accommodations. The men's dorm that I stayed in was a rather old mobile home/trailer. It was in poor condition inside with sagging floors, dirty carpet and doors that wouldn't close. It was in need of some serious cleaning, the bathtub/shower was full of spiders, the kitchen was dirty, the refrigerator was scary, and there was very little in the way of usable utensils/dishes in the kitchen. During the day the inside of the trailer heated up like an oven. At least the bedroom did have a working air conditioner. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend this hostel to others simply for the hot springs. But be prepared for rather "rustic" accommodations.

The hot tub is nice. The bed, however, (private room) was slanted and uncomfortable.

Hot springs and cuties from New Zealand — this place rocks! Watch out for "sound effects" and things that go bump in the night. There's a teepee that you can sleep in or you can sleep indoors. The dormitory style rooms only have two or three beds in a room, at least in the women's dorm, so they have a private feel. There is a cozy kitchen in the girls' dorm, too. Friends we've met say the boy's dorm is "sketchy at best." The town is super-cute with all kinds of thrift stores and interesting real estate for sale, including a church with hot springs for $60,000. We liked it so much we stayed an extra night to soak in the tubs while soaking up the scenery of the Rio Grande, mountains, and stars. Once again, this place rocks.

This place was very strange, but nice in ways. The staff were very special (especially a certain beautiful person who cooked for several people), and the food was the best I've ever eaten--truly!! I had a wonderful time with a few people, and the baths are very nice.

This place is tops! I was there in the summer of 1999, and I am still moved to extol its virtues. It has super-nice people. You can soak in the hot springs and jump into the freezing Rio Grande. It has great atmosphere and people.
