The Hostelz.com Review
All in all, this hostel has the potential to be cool. Maybe. There's a dining room, a small but handy kitchen, an outdoor terrace and a common room with a TV.
But beyond that, if you're looking for a touch of boot camp in your travelling experience, then the Funky Chicken is the place for you. The hostel gives one the feeling of being an unwelcome houseguest; staff go out of their way to yell at people, and are generally cold and unfriendly. The entire place has a general vibe of 'tread lightly or go home'.
The facilities include only one shower, one toilet, and one combined toilet-and-shower, which would be quite inadequate if the place were full. And the common room shares a thin door with one of the dorm rooms, so at night that dorm can be very loud.
It is, however, the most central hostel in Bucharest, as well as a hair cheaper (1 to 2 euro) than the other Bucharest hostels. And it's by far the easiest to get to (only a five to ten minute walk from Gara de Nord train station with no need for trams or busses). If convenience is what you're looking for, it might be worthwhile; otherwise, consider staying elsewhere.

I just walked in to this hostel at 8:30 p.m. and hoped that they would have a free bed and they did. So I was super happy to have roof over my head in Bucharest and did not expect more then that and this hostel provided just that. It was all right. Quite clean, nice staff, ok bathroom, but no breakfast (well, the price is 8 euros) and unfortunately no internet for quests. But it s a good location and the staff is friendly. If you are just looking for a place to spend the night then Funky Chicken will do the job. — Yana (2007-05-09)

it is a great hostel, the greatest i know since i'm traveling! the staff is excellent (Miki and Andrea) and if somebody will ask me where i've stayed in bucharest i'll recommend funky chicken, the location is good (in the center of the city), it's partly clean. very, very, very nice staff, they treat you great even they work a lot, i think they do the whole work there! thank you for the accommodation! see you next year. — jhon (2007-02-20)
This hostel is very fitting in Bucharest. It's fine; it's just that something is missing. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it's just not great! — Mike, UK (2005-08-28)

It is a very nice hostel, situated in a good area. It is very cheap — 8 euros. The staff are friendly (I like the blonde girl who works there), helpful and they helped me a lot. I will come again next year. — a friend (2005-04-17)

It's a nice place to stay if you're planning to visit Bucharest...great atmosphere and an amazing opportunity to meet travelers and exchange thoughts. — Sonia (2005-03-26)

The beds aren't the best in the world, but what do you expect — the Ritz? The kitchen is good enough and the atmosphere is great. The main bathroom could fit five showers, so I can't figure out why they only had the one in there and one on the ground floor. The location is fine and the staff were helpful, even though they did tell us off for being too noisy. But then again, it was around five in the morning. I would stay there again. — Brothers of Kakaaa (2005-03-16)

This is one of the best-situated hostels in the city. Satellite TV was nice after so many weeks without any TV at all, and it had a decent kitchen area. However, it can be noisy and the mattresses seemed to be stuffed with rocks. — Big Ben (2005-02-06)
We stayed there in November and it wasn't really busy. The location is okay and as for the rest, you pay for what you get! I paid the same price for a hostel in Brasov, which had much better rooms. The bathrooms here are not really clean and the beds are very hard, because the mattress was very thin and there are wooden boards under it. The staff wasn't really helpful and even if you were in the main room, they didn't bother talking to you or switching the TV channel to English. You pay 8 euros and I think that's what it's worth. — Anonymous (2005-01-07)

It was cheap, and it was the best located of the hostels. It was easy to find from the station and the nearest to the main attractions by foot, though a little far from the nearest Metro. It was basic, and the mattresses were uncomfortable, but towels and clean sheets were provided, as was a hot shower and a TV with many channels (I'd forgotten how much I'd missed TV). Just be careful to not slam the gate, as it's very easy to do. — Not a mad Canadian girl, but a limey (2004-11-02)
It was okay. — Tom Carr (2004-10-06)

It's great here if you want to stay awake. Bring ear plugs or ask to sleep upstairs. — Anonymous (2004-09-22)

I just loved it!! Marvelous, fantastic, bloody brilliant... Can't really explain it, you have to see it. When I come back to Romania, I will surely visit there again and again and again... Oh bless :) All that you need and cheap. — Dragostea din tei (2004-07-13)

This is a wonderful hostel with very pleasant staff and clean bathrooms. It is only 15 minutes on foot from here to the most interesting parts of the beautiful city of Bucharest. I will surely come back. — Can and Peri (2004-04-09)

The hostel was within 20 minute walk of most of the sights of Bucharest and a 15 minute walk from the train station. Cable TV, a full kitchen, and 24 hour check-in. Hot shower and laundry, on a quiet street, near a small market and ATM. — Anonymous (2004-03-01)
