Fossa Holiday Hostel is attached to a caravan park located eight kilometers out of town, in the middle of nothing, with very little to do.
The owners are very friendly and helpful. The hostel has large rooms and is very clean. Facilities include a well-stocked kitchen and dining room. Around the other side of the main building there's a laundry, TV room and games room (billiards and pinball games). The rooms are spacious but the mattresses sag a bit (giving us backaches each night). The showers are lovely -- a little dark, but the pressure and the temperature are perfect and they are very very clean.
Also at the site is a small store which is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (6 p.m. in the off-season) and a restaurant which is open Fridays through Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
By far, the biggest problem is the isolation. You can catch the bus into town directly in front of the hostel. There Time it right and you are fine -- it runs six to eight times a day. Miss the bus, you have to wait up to two hours for the next one (and even longer on Sundays). Alternate transport is possible, but a taxi will cost you more, and bikes must be hired from town. If you have your own car, this place would be lovely, as it's on the way to the Ring of Kerry. Day tours of the Ring of Kerry will usually pick you up from a bar about ten minutes' walk back toward town.
