The Hostelz.com Review
MEININGER Berlin Tempelhofer Ufer is located right across the Landwehr Canal, in front of another Meininger hostel. The Meininger network is very well known in Germany for the excellency of its services and the remarkable quality of its beds.

The Location

The hostel is not very far from the center of Berlin and the main touristic points. Checkpoint Charlie is a ten-minute walk away. Access is quite easy, conveniently by subway, which offers two stations (Moeckenbruecke and Hallesches Tor) in the vicinity at walking distances. The subway line runs straight from the Tegel, the main Berlin airport. The hostel entrance is not so easy to find, as the door is pretty small, but a big sign above it makes it easier to locate the building from one or the other side of the canal.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Though the building is old (pre-WWII, beginning of the century), it is refurbished and comprises three floors. Dorms are huge, with high ceilings. They are very fresh in the summer and the heating is ok in the winter. There is plenty of room for the two bunk beds and three regular beds available in each room. The décor is simple and there is a convenient TV set to spare time. There are metal lockers located at a small room contiguous to the dorm that are excessively noisy.

Every bed has a convenient reading light (and they work). Linen and towel are included in the price. Each room has an individual toilet and shower, conveniently located right by. Easy to reach WCs are also available in each floor (adequate in the mornings, when customers fill in the room bathrooms).

Beds are comfortable, confirming that Meininger really worries about the sleep quality of its customers. The rooms and toilets are all very clean, with daily cleaning every morning. Security is an issue and one key opens the front door and operates the lift, while an individual magnetic card is available to open the main reception dorm and the dorm door.

Common Spaces

The hostel reception is on the first floor of the building, making access a little hard since there are stairs to climb. The access from the reception to the rooms in the other two floors is easier, thru elevator. Breakfast is all-you-can-eat-type, at a price not very convenient. In both floors, there are wide living rooms, with sofas, tables, and chairs -- excellent to chat, or read, or plan a trip or the next day sightseeing. The windows have nice views of the sides of the building, with silent causeways, lined with trees and vegetation.

Reception closes at 2 p.m. and after that, all must be decided at the main Meininger hostel on the other side of the canal. If you happen to arrive this time, check-in is there (as well as check-out after that time). It is extremely inconvenient to cross the river for whatever you need. There is a nice kitchen available for cooking and also a room for free luggage keeping, but they are both located at the other Meininger.

The hostel has a nice bar (also on the other side of the river), which is often busy with student groups that stay in the hostel. Right on the corner, a good and cheap restaurant is available for those who prefer to eat out. There are also supermarkets and a drink store in the vicinity.

The English-speaking staff are very friendly and helpful -- the service is very professional and package tours and tickets for shows are available with a discount at the reception (also at the main Meininger). Internet is available at a cost at the main Meininger.

Summary

This hostel is very quiet -- not the party kind of hostel. Although there is no curfew, silence is strictly respected after 10 o’clock. Despite all the activity being concentrated at the other Meininger, with the consequent restrictions, it is exactly this condition that makes this place so quiet and relaxing in the midst of busy Berlin.

5  What a breakfast!!! Cereal, coffee, milk, candy, juices, etc. and this is not all: you can have it on a balcony with all Berlin under your feet. This is a great hostel with very nice staff, too. It has a good kitchen and laundry at a cheap price and rooms are very comfortable. Staff are also willing to help and give any info about Berlin and there is also a nice cheap supermarket nearby (super cheap, excellent German white wine). Nightlife in Mehringdamm is near the hostel and it's within walking distance to Potsdamer Platz and Branderburger Tor. I loved it!  ()
4  This hostel is a good-valued place to stay. My friends and I stayed only one night there and were satisfied with the place. The staff was helpful and very welcoming. As low-budgeted backpackers, we were happy that they provide a well-equipped kitchen for their guests to use. The all-you-can-eat breakfast is good enough to give you a full stomach to start your day. If your gonna travel in Germany and plan to stay in Berlin, you should try this hostel out.  ()
5  It was really cool and I enjoyed every minute.  ()

5  Traveling thrugh Europe, Berlin and this beutiful hostel were the perfect finish of a great trip. It has the comfort of a hotel for a great price. The interior is perfect and the people working there treat you like you're family. But the best thing is that they had this amazing all you can eat and drink breakfast buffet included in the price, and the same with the bed linen. A great oasis in the center of the big city.  ()
5  I have stayed here for 2 nights and it was a great hostel. It's small so there are not many people around, you don't see many people other then your roommates.  ()
