The Hostelz.com Review
Almond House Backpackers is a lovely hostel that feels like home. The owners are very warm, friendly, and helpful, and their children are such darlings. The hostel has huge glass windows and doors so you get sun all day! The atmosphere is fantastic -- very homey and peaceful. You wouldn't want to leave once you've been here!

The Location

Almond House is situated in a peaceful little neighbourhood called The Wood. There's a lovely organic shop across the street and a quaint pub and awesome fish and chip shop less than five minutes away. The city centre is just a ten-minute walk away while Tahunanui Beach is a ten-minute drive away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Because Almond House is a homestyle hostel, it is relatively small and has only nine rooms with a maximum capacity of twenty-two. There are five rooms outside and four rooms in the main house. The two amazingly spacious share rooms sleep four guests each in two sets of bunk beds. One of then even has a walk in closet where guests can store their luggage and other knick-knacks. Almond House also has twins and doubles, but there are no ensuite rooms. Rest assured, though -- there are enough bathrooms and toilets around! The bathrooms are very, very clean. They are also very spacious. One of the bathrooms in the main house looks like it belongs in a posh hotel room! Everything about Almond House is neat and clean. It's all great!

Common Spaces

Almond House has two very well-equipped, spacious kitchens and lounges -- one outside and one in the main house. You'll find everything you need (including various herbs and spices) to cook a good meal. Seriously, guests lack nothing. There are even herb plants in the garden, so guests can help themselves to fresh basil and parsley. The lounge area is very comfortable, but there are no TVs because the owners prefer guests to mingle and get to know one another. There are board games and jigsaw puzzles as well as a book exchange corner. Resident cat, Missy, shares the common areas with guests. She is a sweetheart.

Summary

Almond House is situated in a wonderful town and it is the place to stay, especially if you like peace and quiet and friendly owners and travelers! It is not the right place for people who like to party, though. If you base yourself there for a while, you might find yourself blessed with wonderful memories and lasting friendships.
