The Hostelz.com Review
Old Bones Backpackers is an absolutely charming little hostel and one of the best hostel experiences you could ever have. It is a home-style hostel that houses a maximum of sixteen guests, so if you want somewhere peaceful and quiet for chilling out, this is it!
The Location
Old Bones is almost in the middle of nowhere. Driving down Beach Road toward the hostel, you are rewarded with a great view of the ocean. And then you arrive at this beautiful, one-story house in the middle of a big field that is Old Bones. It is a five-minute drive from the Oamaru city centre, as well as the Blue Penguin Colony (you have to check out the adorable, irresistible blue penguins!). The only downside is it is not accessible to travelers without their own form of transport. But give the owners a call -- they might give you a lift from the town centre!
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are only twin and double rooms; all are pretty spacious. Twin rooms have two single beds. All the rooms have enough space for you to store your luggage and not trip all over them. The bathrooms are big and clean. There are no en-suite rooms, though.
Common Spaces
The most eye-catching part about Old Bones is the view from the lounge -- it is breathtaking. The lounge is spacious and has several couches as well as a fireplace. Sitting in the lounge gazing at the ocean is something many guests enjoy doing. There is no television, but there are many board games and jigsaw puzzles around! The kitchen is very well-equipped and is spacious enough for a few people to cook at a time. No elbow jostling in there!
Summary
Old Bones is a marvelous, intimate hostel. The owners, Gloria and Wayne, are so warm and make guests feel at home upon arrival. Sometimes, they may even join guests for a cup of tea! They are always willing to answer your queries or recommend sights to see. Resident dog, Bonnie, is a delight to be around. Old Bones is not merely a hostel, it is a beautiful home.

Its hard to find a backpackers that is just like home. We planned to stay for one night and ended up staying for three. This is a fantastic, comfortable, clean, relaxing, and cosy place to stay. We would highly recommend staying here for a travel break on the east coast. — Dominique (2007-01-26)
