The Hostelz.com Review
Bohemia Cairns Resort is more like a budget hotel/motel than a hostel, though it does offer dorms/room shares and has a kitchen/rec area/laundry facility, like any proper hostel. It's clean; quiet; and has a beautiful, tropical setting.

The Location

Bohemia Resort is approximately one-and-a-half kilometers from downtown Cairns, which can be quite a trek (especially with luggage). It is however, only one off a major road, Sheridan street and less than twelve blocks from the transit center at Cairns Central. The airport is a ways away. It's best to splurge and get the cab to town if you're carrying big bags.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The private rooms are beautiful and offer a mini-fridge, coffee making station, and terraces large enough for you to sit and have a meal outside. The room shares are also clean and fairly deserted, which works out great for the low cost. The bathroom is lovely with clean, hot water and great water pressure. Each room has a TV (albeit small) and several channels for your viewing pleasure. Bed is comfy and fresh sheets and towels are supplied daily.

Common Spaces

The pool is much larger than the other hostels we've seen and has a private bar, nice lounge chairs, picnic tables, pool tables, and a large screen TV featuring rugby matches. Internet is supplied onsite via global gossip or you can splurge for incredibly fast broadband connection.

Summary

For such a low cost, this is one of the most lovely places we've stayed in during our time in Australia. It's well worth trekking a bit out of town for a clean, beautiful, budget resort, though it's best to not walk there alone after dark (we did not have any problems but heard of a few).

1  Nice Hostel but in a bad location. The hourly Bus service is great but the buses do not have enough seats so have to make several trips. The Staff are extremely rude. I got the feeling the staff didn't want to work there. When you order their expensive food at the bar you then are told abruptly that you have to cook it yourself on the BBQ. Only food bought at the bar can be cooked on the BBQ so they charge extortionately for the food.  ()
1  A beautifully presented hostel... far from your expectations.... saying that so are the staff! Rude Rude Rude. had to leave after 2 days as created such a horrible atmosphere... like being back at school! Would vist agian if staff could be trained in customer service!  ()
1  I had a really bad experience with this hostel. First it took them 1hr45min for them to pick me up from the airport. Once i was picked up the driver said he had never received notification from the office to pick me up the first time (i called twice after waiting tooo long!) Then as soon as i did get there and settled in i found out about the charge for utencels/kitchen only open till 9, but they made an exception and let me hire the dishes and into the kitchen. MY BED HAD BED BUGS!! EWWW....this REALLY bothered me! As soon as my prepaid voucher nights (From peterpans...also a bad experience) were done i was out of there, and on to Gilligans which was much nicer!. This place is also REALLY far out of town, I couldn't go meet up with friends i made on day tours in town cuz it was dark and the free shuttle does not go past was it 9 or 10?...early, and not late enough to go out partying at all. I would not recomend this place to the next traveler.  ()
4  Definitely the most gorgeous hostel we stayed in on the East Coast, was more hotel-like than hostel. Really nice surroundings, very "tropical" feeling, gorgeous swimming pool and bar area. The room (4 bed, no bunks, yay!) was spacious, had patio doors out to a garden area, sink, tiled floor (no carpet, yay again!). Also had air con and a fan. There were plenty of showers (individual ones, not those nasty ones you get in some hostels that are like the minging swimming pool style ones) close to the room which was marv. The hostel was a bit out of town ($8 in a taxi? Also courtesy bus every hour until about 8pm), but there was a corner shop next door and a BP garage at the end of the road. Bottleshop only a 5 min walk as well. The only downside was the staff, they were realy quite rude and had little patience. Also there wasn't enough of them, there was always a huge queue in reception, just to get on the internet you had to wait about 10 minutes. But hey, still a great hostel!  ()
3  This place is ok if you can make your way through the red tape. The rooms are clean and pool area is nice but the staff are incredibly rude and the booking system is so bad that we ended up having to leave early. (If you want to extend your stay basically you can't unless you pay up front and arrange it days ahead — so very, very inflexible.) The staff do treat people like idiots and do not want to do anything to help you with a problem and are very slow at dealing with anything at all. The "restaurant" is a self-cook barbecue that you are only allowed to use if you buy the food from the bar, so you can't cook your own stuff on it (umm, very useful, thanks, guys!). Also you have to rent cutlery and have to carry the huge plastic boxes around. This place would have been lovely if things ran smoother and the staff were friendlier.  ()
3  I stayed 6 nights at this place and I have both good and bad experiences. I'll start with the good. 1. The rooms and sheets were clean. Generally the resort was very clean. 2. They actually provide towels and fridges in the double rooms (don't know about the dorms because I didn't stay there). 3. The pool and bar area is nice and they have a friendly bartender named Jay. 4. The clientele is generally slightly older (about mid 20s to older) which is good because it means a bit more peace at nights. 5. They have security gates at night where you need a code to get in. 6. They have a free shuttle service to the city and back. 7. They have a nice BBQ area or dinner. Now the bad: 1. The manager (Rachel) is extremely rude and actually walked away from me when I was speaking to her because she didn't want to have to deal with a problem they created (and so is one other girl who works at the reception (who actually looks a little like Rachel's sister). 2. Never rely on their free shuttle service as it was late 90% of the time I took it. Because their shuttle service was late, I missed my coach to the airport, which the manager (Rachel) refused to give me a refund for. 3. Someone stole my key one night when I was having a drink at the bar. On this occasion though, Rachel gave me a spare key to my room...well she had to didn't she? She didn't seem quite happy that she had to go through the trouble of doing it though. 4. The spa that they have is not heated and neither is the pool. In fact the water in the spa is really cold, so I never saw anyone in it. I tried to get into it myself once and got as far as my feet. 5. Even though they have a kitchen, you have to pay $10 to "rent" plates and utensils. 6. They have a big screen TV which ruins the whole atmosphere at the pool when they play the same movies every night. 7. The showers in the toilets are right above your head so you have to get your hair wet every time you shower. 8. Their en suite showers flood water into the toilet area. 9. Their floors are quite sticky (too much soap when mopping) so it can get quite slippery. 10. Their balconies are of no use as you can't see anything from the ground floor due to the huge bush growing just around it. 11. You have to buy the meat for BBQing from the bar, and the grill was really too hot so the meat got burnt. 12. It's a long walk to the city...about 40 minutes. So generally, there were more bad things than good. If you asked me, I definitely would not be staying there again.  ()
5  Good place to stay! Spacious rooms, clean kitchen and helpful staff. They only have single beds. It's a bit out of town but they have a little van going into town every hour. One of the best places I stayed in Oz.  ()
2  We have recently stayed here and while the staff were pleasant and the rooms were clean and tidy we found them to be too small to enjoy a 10-day stay. We had a Queen/Double en suite room. To use the toilet your feet were actually in the shower. There are no phones in any of the rooms. The only phone available is in the e-mail room and the office shuts at 9 p.m. so there is nothing available in case of emergency. It is too far to walk into town and takes 8 to 10 minutes by the shuttle service available. We would not stay there again.  ()
1  Very bad hospitality from the crew, who were rude and aggressive. I had a terrible time there. DON'T GO THERE!!!  ()
1  The hostel itself is very beautiful, but the workers and the reception staff are very rude and offensive towards people, without any reason. They have no patience for people who don't understand English very well. I wouldn't go back there again!!  ()
1  The staff were horrible at this place! They were not very helpful and talked to you like you were an idiot. The rooms look nice but with no carpet everything is always wet (and slippery) including the bathroom floors. The bathrooms were almost always dirty and the mold in the showers was disgusting. There is a barbecue but you can't cook your own meat on it, only the meat you buy from them at the bar. The bar could be a great place at night but they always put on a movie and ruin the atmosphere. Oh, and to add to everything the room I was in had just had the door painted and the room reeked of fumes, paint fumes; good I guess if you want to get high. Overall this was the worst hostel environment that I have stayed at in Oz.  ()
4  We had a four-day stay here and this was our first hostel stay in Australia. Our first thoughts were that it was a resort and not a hostel. Our room was cleaned (properly) daily. Fridges, air-conditioning, and ceiling fans were provided. Staff were helpful, although we felt they were biased to certain companies offering trips. Fully recommended.  ()
5  Found the staff, including the owner, very friendly and helpful. The room was perfectly clean. The only negative was the water in the shower flooded the floor which did become slippery and also had hardly any hot water. But overall I really enjoyed the stay and would definitely return, despite the cold showers. It's certainly well worth the price!!!  ()
1  Our room flooded twice, the staff/owner was rude and abusive especially when our room flooded for the second time at 12:30 at night. We were forced to move rooms twice given no apology or refund. The whole place lacked atmosphere (except for the black cloud over the owners head!) and entertainment. Out of all the hostels all around Oz this has to be the worst! The doors slam, the showers flood, the A/C's so noisy you can't sleep, the staff are rude and unhelpful, it lacks atmosphere and the pool table doesnt have a light over it!!! What kind of place is this!  ()
4  In December 2002, new owners took over and are upgrading the resort. All rooms now have air conditioning. New staff with great positive attitude now man the front desk. A BBQ area is being built for DIY BBQ cooking. This place is a great stay for clean, quiet and inexpensive accommodation.  ()
