The Hostelz.com Review
Monteverde Backpackers Hostel is small and quiet and a little on the dark side. But the staff are helpful about available activities, and they greet you in the morning with a light and fresh breakfast -- free coffee too.
The Location
Just around the corner and down the hill from downtown Santa Elena and the bus stop, it's easy to find and it's right next door to the supermarket.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are two mixed dorm rooms here, each with a bathroom with a hot shower. Everything is clean and neat, and the mattresses are comfy.
Common Spaces
There's a small semi-outdoor kitchen with a camp stove -- very basic -- and a small sitting room with two computers (free internet), and lockers and a TV with local channels. The best place though is two rocking chairs on the sheltered patio, where you can drink your morning coffee while watching the cloud mist blowing through the treetops.
Summary
This is not a party hostel by any means, but after a long day of La Fortuna activities, the hot showers, good mattresses, and the healthy breakfast in the morning, you may just think you're in paradise.

Great! I loved this Hostel! It was quiet and clean and comfortable. the Proprietor was extremely helpful and helped us book the next leg of our trip. A man came by right as we were checking in, and tried to tell my friend and I that there was a cheaper hostel option down the road, but then asked to see the room we were about to be checked in to, saying he'll just come in with us and see it. This was more than a bit creepy to me, and the Proprietor (Carlos?) told the man it was not possible, and that there were no more vacancies, so he'd have to leave. This gesture made me feel safe, and was much appreciated. As for the room, it was upstairs, and had a private bathroom with shower. The breakfast was great, and the coffee was amazing. I'd stay again. — Miranda , Canada (2011-01-08)

Very comfy beds! We stayed here for two nights and it was nice. We rented the private room and the beds were definitely the most comfortable of our entire trip. The hostel is very small but in a good location, just down the hill from the supermarket. The owner was very helpful in organizing tours but be prepared to pay an extra $5 a person for this service. The kitchen left a lot to be desired and could use a thorough cleaning but otherwise it was a great place to stay and we met some great people while there. — Christy , Canada (2008-12-15)

Nice and quiet little hostel.. This didn't seem like a party hostel. It's in a nice and quiet little location. The rooms seem very new and tranquil. The guy who worked there (I forgot his name) was very helpful and honest about the tours. I don't think there are many rooms and beds here compared to a lot of hostels, but that just adds to the peacefulness of the hostel since there are less people. Free internet, a television room, and a free fruit breakfast. Very nice little place, probably still nice and quiet cause guidebooks haven't reviewed it yet. — mary , USA (2008-04-27)

My eleven-year old niece and I stayed here for three nights. The hostel has been open less than three months but so far, so great! Excellent staff, especially Diego. Very helpful and friendly. Adrien is great with emails. The hostel itself is centrally-located in Monteverde, steps from the bus station, supermarket, and restaurants (ask about discounts). We stayed in a dorm room which was basic but clean (no bugs!). A bonus was the in-room bathroom with a large shower. They have plans to add a garden, a courtyard with hammocks, a larger gathering room with couches, two more rooms upstairs, and, also, a wood deck on the second floor. I gave this hostel four stars so they can strive for the five once these additions are in place. We will be back! — Monica (2007-03-13)
