Hostelz.com's Review
Part of a string of backpackers hostels found throughout the UK, Eastgate Backpackers Hostel keeps with the traditional priority of having fun. There are comical (but not very child-appropriate!) paintings on the walls, and in the evenings the lounge is packed with fast friends.

The Location

The hostel is a five-minute walk from the bus and train stations. Even better, anyone on the street can tell you where High Street is (they will probably direct you by referencing Eastgate Shopping Mall). From the bus station, walk in the opposite direction as the buses are facing, down Strothers Lane, and take a left on Academy Street (B865). Pass the train station on your left. The street will bend to the left, and you will see Eastgate Shopping with a skywalk in front of you. Walk down this road until you are about to cross under the skywalk, then turn right and pass through another tunnel (Crown Road) and take a right onto the pedestrians-only High Street. The hostel is almost immediately on your left.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are six beds per room, and the dorms are mixed. There are no nightlights. Though a cleaning crew is at work every day, the dorms and bathrooms give the distinct impression of never having been washed. On arrival, you are given a sleep sac but no pillowcase. The beds are grimy and in some cases broken, with a hole in the middle where the springs have given way. Beware of sleeping by the windows -- only the staff is allowed to operate them, so you will be at the mercy of any midnight freeze or rainstorm.

In the same way, the bathrooms look unkempt. The cloth hand towels threaten to make your hand-washing worthless, and the floors are littered with scraps of wrappers and toilet paper. The showers, at least, are equipped with soap dishes, hooks, and changing space.

Common Spaces

This hostel caters to the free-spirited and fun-loving backpacker. The common spaces seem dedicated to making noise and having a good time. No one seems to mind the close quarters, though a quiet individual would find them cramped. Both the kitchen and the lounge are small but well equipped. There is free Wi-Fi available.

Summary

For those people who like to party and are not picky about cleanliness, this hostel is the place for you; otherwise, you should plan to lock yourself in your room for peace and quiet and to bring your own bedding. In the heart of Inverness, it has all the energy of a city hostel.

1   Very poor. I would rather sleep in a box than stay here again. Sullen staff, hellish beds, and buckets and mops unemptied in the kitchen. Doors that cannot close without banging and loutish guests made this one to forget. The No Refunds sign is there for a reason.  , Scottish ()
5  Eastgate is a small hostel on a street in what can be considered the shopping district of Inverness. (Inverness is small and everyone knows everyone there. Everything closes at 5 p.m. as well, be warned.) The hostel didn't look very clean at first sight but it actually is. The employees clean every day and even sanitize the silverware every once in a while. The staff are great, especially Kylie. There is a small garden out back (ask where it is, the sign is easy to miss) where you can smoke, but make sure the doors are propped open because they will lock behind you. The beds are comfy and the bedsheets are washed between each guest.  , U.S.A. ()
5  This is for sure the BEST hostel in Scotland, it is so much fun to stay at and the staff are super friendly and cool!!! There was lots of hot water and showers, free tea and coffee, you get a high view of a quaint quiet street, and it's a hop away from pubs and good food. It also had really comfortable beds, which is always a bonus!! I recommend renting their bikes and going up the Ness island trails. GREAT PLACE!!!  ()
5  Fab place, very clean. There's only a few showers... but hey I never had to wait for anyone. For the ones who were waiting, there were chairs!!! The people were very nice, especially the blondish girl at reception. It also has a fabulous kitchen that allows some real cooking. We cooked macaroni for 16 people in there!!!  ()
4  Really good hostel, one of the best I've seen. There are few showers, but the place is so charming I'm willing to overlook that(but it's the reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars). Really really clean, super-friendly people, clean and modern kitchen, free tea and coffee (thank-you, Mr. Gaelic!). I'm definitely coming back. The place was quiet, too. The showers need some explaining :). Love this one, definitely recommended!  ()
3  The staff was helpful but overworked. The room was nice and clean but the shower situation could have been better. The worst thing was the LOUSY phone service. They had a phone designed to take your money and leave you hanging!!  ()
