A place to sleep! Being a U.S. Ranger, I've been in worse places ... — HB Surfer Guy , United States (2012-04-19)
Decent place to stay but Rick ruined it all The main reason we stayed there was because we were car camping the nights before and wanted a shower, flushable toilets and to stop moving around for a couple of days. After camping, the place seemed to have offered a lot -- bar, dip tanks for wet suits, washing machine, large and fully stocked kitchen, sense of security, board games. The area is also really nice and kinda convenient if you wanna surf around the area (Long Beach, Punta Cabra, the rivermouth). The owner, Rick, was a really arrogant sleazy prick though. Really went out of his way to not help us when we asked questions. At the beginning of the conversation he seemed okay, but then if you asked further, he would give you some longwinded bullsh!t runaround and told us to read all the signs in the hostel for the answer (which there are a LOT of and a LOT of rules and penalty fees). Being in the service industry, you figure you would provide service to your customers: this guy was really put off that we were inconveniencing him. Lulu, though, seemed really cool. I also thought it was a little pricey and there were a lot of little charges everywhere. Seemed money-grubbing. I'd only *consider* staying there again if he wasn't there. — Anonymous , USA (2012-01-05)
DONT GO HERE!!! The owner Rick is the only problem here. The place is awesome and the people are nice. The only problem is the owner. Thanks LULU!! — Anonymous , American (2011-01-25)
Douche bag Rick does it again!!!!!!! If it weren't for lulu and Tao i would never come back to this place. The location is superb and the accommodations are great but the owner Rick is a complete douche bag. He treats his wife terrible and his help even worse. You almost want to let them know that there is something better out there, that you don't have to be a mail order slave to that self serving d bag. What makes it worse is that he doesn't think that he is doing Anything wrong. He thinks that he is helping people by letting them know how screwed up he thinks that they are, but really, he is the screwed up one. He really is that bad. this is just not what he is cut out to do and his business will fail because he doesn't take all these reviews to heart. If he just left and let lulu run the place or even let his wife run the place then things would be ok. No one wants to feel that uncomfortable. He says that people who leave these reviews don't really even go to his place and don't even know where it is, well i can tell you that i have been going to your place for years. When you ran it it sucked and when adam ran it, it ws great. Now you are running it again and it sucks. You give a new meaning to the word sexist know it all pig. You better change your ways or you wont have anyone there anymore. And i mean in your personal life or your business life. Your thai wife will only put up with you treating her like sh*t for so long and then what will you do? — Anonymous , United states (2011-01-12)
Owner is a total perv This is a dangerous area, If the locals don't get you the owner (rick) will. Avoid at all costs. — ur buddy greg , Easy street (2010-11-04)
Could do worse The place is pretty hip, the guests lovely, good surf breaks nearby, cleanish, but man, the owner Rick is off the hook. Maybe he spent too much time in his sweat lodge. Seems to have serious control issues -- particularly if you have a brain and remotely challenge him intellectually. Indeed a case study. Rest of the staff is great. Good place for a one time stay -- would look elsewhere next visit to Baja. — maryannfaithful , US (2009-02-03)

Heaven This is quite possibly the nicest hostel I've ever stayed at. Not only are the staff wonderful and helpful, but the amenities here are on par with most four- or five-star hotels. The bar is great, the game room is entertaining, and the spa looked beautiful. We came to baja to camp, hike, and snorkel, but found ourselves spending as much time at the hostel as on the land. If you are heading to baja, plan on spending a couple nights here -- it'll be worth your while, and wont hurt your wallet. — Jessica , American (2008-08-26)

Beyond what you hope for This place is seriously awesome. Rick, the owner, is as friendly and informative as can be. He keeps a comfortable and happy home for all guests. The place feels like my friend's living room. There are instruments to play, movies to borrow, tons of games, and mellow music all day. Breakfast is free with your stay, delicious pancakes and coffee. There's a bar area with a fire pit, a fun happy hour, game room with pool, foos, and ping pong, you can use the nice homey kitchens (and grill), and there's even a basketball hoop. Rick can hook you up with surf boards, boogie boards, wetsuits -- the whole thing. And to cap it off, Ta gives unreal Thai and Hot Oil massages at a very reasonable price. I've stayed in some hostels in my day, and I can say unequivocally this is the best. And it's reasonably priced. And there's a view of the ocean. And you can get a private room if you want. And if you're smart, you'll throw down the $60 to show your ladyfriend a beautiful night in the Crow's Nest, atop the hostel, with a three-hundred-sixty-degree view. I really have more to say, but really have to stop now. Do yourself a favor and come here! — Noah from SanFran , USA (2007-12-27)

Very clean and friendly. Excellent view of the ocean The short drive off the beaten path is completely worth it. The breakfast is good, and the bar service is also great. I fully recommend the Thai massage, Ta works wonders. After two months on the road this hostel was a welcome stay to recharge and relax. — sheldon vos , canada (2007-12-20)

The most pleasant suprise we could have run accross We came across Coyote Cal's by accident on a surf trip and were shocked at what a haven this place is. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the bartender is cute, and everyone staying here has been super chill. You cant get bored even if the waves are flat because they make sure that you are well informed about what is around. There is ping pong, pool, basketball, hanging out by the fire, you name it. There is a book listing all of the points of interest in the area including hiking and biking trails, petroglyphs, all the surf spots (one of them you will have to figure out for yourself is freekin radical). And to top it all off it is very safe here. This wont be the last time I come here, thats for sure. — Chip Moreland , USA (2007-12-19)

A lovely and friendly place, highly recommended Very welcoming people, friendly and helpful. The house has lovely individual decorations and details. It was fantastic to have a kitchen to cook our own meals, especially traveling with a small child. Kevin (two-and-a-half years old) was very happy about the toys. Lovely surrounding, a bit of sandy beach nearby the house. We woke up in a room with large windows and amazing red morning light and sea view to the wide ocean. We also had wonderful sunsets directly into the ocean. We liked the mixture of different cultural influences we could see there, for example a little buddhist temple at the door or Indian sweat huts outside. — karin trees , Germany (2007-12-03)

The great peace I've been looking for. If you're looking for peace, fun, food, and a comfortable place to stay, this place is excellent. I love to come to Coyote Cal's to forget the city life and all the turbulence and polluted influence of tourists and swindlers. In this place you can see all the stars, the sea breeze is always refreshing. There are always people in the hostel or in the campground. I love the snorkeling, the fishing, the mussels, the sea shells, lobster, and the abalone. My respect to the owner and his fulfilled dreams and creative ideas for Baja California, a very educated and family man, who runs a fun, safe, and well run hostel. This time I came down it was pretty solo. Next week I'm coming back with a bunch of friends. It's a great place to completely rejuvenate yourself and meet new people and throw private parties and some times mix into them. I ultimately recommend this place. — frankie , mexico (2007-11-26)
A case study for all you psychology students I recently revisited Coyote Cal's hostels in Mexico and found it a much different experience from my previous time down. What a difference a year makes. The first time I went the place was incredible, from the food, to the locals, to the good music, to the cool people running the place, it was quickly one of my favorite places on the planet (and I've traveled a lot). A place like no other where travelers came together to relate to one another. Sadly after a year, only the locals, and food remained. Now the place was being managed by some guy named Rick that for me, a current Psychology student, made a great case study. If you're in search of a Meglomaniac, with a Napolean complex, a latent sexist, mixed with a touch of disdain for the Mexican people and culture you've found the guy here at Coyote Cal's. He also kept talking about how much he hated the U.S. because of all the rules. But when he's around this man is much worse than the U.S. government when it comes to enforcing rules. He seemed to take pleasure in embarrassing me in front of all the other guests when I simply asked where I could find a kitchen appliance. He also kept talking about his Thai wife (Where was she?), but spent the night trying to get me and my friends drunk and back in his trailer. We finally had enough and went to spend time in our room away from him. The rest of the stay we avoided him whenever possible, exploring the beautiful beaches, coastline, and mountains. Sadly I won't be heading back to Coyote Cal's. — Jen , US (2007-08-08)

I had a fantastic time at the hostel. I went there to relax, walk on the beach, and meet a few nice people. It definitely exceeded my expectations. The free breakfast was cooked by the Manager's Thai wife, Ta, who is an excellent cook and also has a Thai Massage on the premises. The hostel is well run, and the Manager really seems to put a lot of energy into the small details, making the place look and feel great. The manager does seem to be an alpha male without a pack, but if you are self-sufficient and stay out of his way, he can be perfectly friendly and helpful. I will definitely go back for the fresh fish, beaches, friendly townspeople, great breakfast, and new friendships. — Tim , usa (2007-04-23)

I have now been to Coyote Cal's three times. Twice with big groups and once with just my fiancee. I have never been with a person who didn't love it. It is an amazing spot, well away from touristy areas. The people you get there are travelers instead. Great drink specials, clean rooms, but it isn't a hotel. To the people complaining about the room size, it is a hostel that happens to offer a couple of private rooms, go back to the holiday inn if you want more. Rick who owns the place is best summed up as my fiancee Racheal calls him Hippy Dippy Rick. He is laid back and friendly but still has a business to run. He had to deal with a crazy drunk when we were there but kept his cool way after I would have. I like the place so much that we are having our wedding there in a few months, the first according to Rick. They also just opened a massage room with Rick's wife doing Thai massage, reflexology (I think), and teaching massage lessons. Aside from the hostel, Erendira (or Point Isidiro) is really a small village with a couple of stores. Highly recommended getaway from Cali and all the cruise ship towns of Baja. — Flounder (2007-01-13)
