YMCA Hostel Basel is a clean and modern hostel ten minutes away from the central terminal of Basel. The hostel has a good, quiet atmosphere, but perhaps a bit too quiet. This is the hostel for the traveler who seeks a clean bed, hot shower, and calm evening. Prices are fair (for a city like Basel); all public transportation is a short work away; and most importantly, the central train and bus terminal is a ten-minute walk away.
The Location
The hostel is situated on a street leading to the central train and bus terminal. Exiting the back of the terminal and crossing the road, you will find yourself in that street. Travel ten minutes down the street and you should see the big YMCA sign on a big modern building on your right. Ask at the counter for a day's tram and bus pass for a cheap price.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel is very modern with everything you would expect to find in a good modern hostel. The doors lock from the inside and the rooms have lockers and toilets. The dorm rooms, however, have to share a shower room per floor. Rooms, including bed linen and toilets, are cleaned daily.
Common Spaces
The whole hostel has a nice atmosphere. There is an internet area with four or five Apple computers); a mess hall for breakfast; and many sitting areas round the building, including a beautiful, somewhat modern-type garden. It would probably be fair to say the downfall of this hostel is its lack of fun and a young atmosphere, but you keep to yourself and think about that clean, comfortable bed.
Summary
All in all, this is not a very "young" hostel, but everything else is tip top. From the proximity to public transportation, to the clean and comfortable rooms, this is a great hostel. If you are a young backpacker, don't plan to stay too long, but even as a young backpacker, the YMCA is a very nice treat from other hostels.
