The Hostelz.com Review
Green Tulip House is a clean; comfortable; and well organized, medium-sized hostel providing an in-house restaurant and spacious accommodation with an energetic, friendly, and helpful staff.

The Location

Situated inside the quiet South-West quadrant of old city Chiang Mai, Green Tulip House is a fair walk from most touristy destinations. Yet moments away are many excellent eateries where you can feast on Northern Thai delicacies in a comfortable atmosphere while not being up-charged as a non-local. South of the hostel is the morning food market and up-city a large Buddhist temple. A long walk to the East will bring thirsty travelers to the Chiang Mai beer bar scene -- a micro-Bangkok if you will. There is local transportation available, but plan on paying a tourist surcharge. And as bus service has been discontinued from the airport, a taxi for the seven-kilometer journey to the hostel is encouraged.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are mixed-sex, double-bunk and/or twin single beds -- air conditioned and fan-only rooms are available. Bunk beds are not as comfortable as single beds, but do provide a good night's sleep. Rooms facing the main road can become a bit noisy from passing traffic, but it's nothing earplugs will not manage. Rooms must be accessed by a flight of stairs.

Showers are spacious and clean with plenty of hot water, though water pressure can be low at times, while bathrooms are adjoining and also well stocked and cleaned regularly. There are no lockers within the rooms.

Common Spaces

There are no cooking facilities, but the in-house kitchen does a good job in keeping both guest and outside traveler happy in meals and drinks. Spacious common areas, including a rooftop setting, provide scenic views of the nearby mountains and there is plenty of privacy throughout the hostel to cozy up to a book or share in a snack or to simply catch a bit of sunshine. In-house internet access, breakfast, and laundry service are all available at a cost, but there's little in the way of entertainment (no television, movies, or the like). The hostel staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the local area and quick to assist.

Summary

Green Tulip House is comfortable accommodation, and clean too. A good mix of friendly and knowledgeable staffers places them above the competition, and their location within the city walls is a plus. However, plan on walking to see sights in town or rather rent a bicycle and cruise. Chiang Mai is flat and traffic is manageable, so for the flat-footed traveler getting a knack for the city will come quickly and Green Tulip House will set you in all the right directions.

5  Home away from home! Very clean and friendly environment to stay in! The rooms and bathrooms are colorful and spotless, and the beds are comfortable. Best of all, the staff are really friendly. I came back after a week and was welcomed like family. Great place!  , US ()
5  Outstanding Cleaner than nearly all hostels I have stayed in Western Europe, the Green Tulip house tops my list of hostels in Thailand and possibly Asia. The restaurant has abundant and delicious menu choices, both Thai and western. The staff are outstanding and if there is anything you need, just ask. Also, be sure to book all activities directly through the hostel in order to receive a discount. They book treks to the tribal villages in small groups but yet still at a very reasonable price. I went on a two day trek and only wished I'd had enough time for three days. One minor drawback worth mentioning though is the traffic noise, but late at night things quiet down for the most part. Nonetheless I still wouldn't hesitate to give this hostel a solid five stars. I would strongly recommend.  , USA ()
5  Best hostel I've ever stayed at! This place is great! The staff are friendly and so helpful. They helped us plan our treks and other events. The restaurant was great!  , USA ()
5  Amazing! This is by far one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in my travels across the world. This was my first visit in Chiang Mai, and in Thailand alone, so I was a bit nervous about how my vacation would be spent. I only had five days in the city before I had to take off, but it was some of the best, most relaxing five days I've ever had. Nine, Stella, and everyone who works there made me feel right at home from the moment I walked in to the Green Tulip. They showed me my room, got some delicious red curry into me and helped me figure out the best way to spend my vacation in Chiang Mai. Starting from the looks alone, this is one of the most gorgeous hostel's I've been in. Bright colors everywhere, wide wooden tables in the lobby/restaurant, beautiful wooden floors in the rooms, a nice terrace to sit out on. It's well-kept, always clean and bright and fresh. Such a nice place to come back to after a long day of trekking and adventuring. The food as well is unbeatable. Fairly good prices, a nice variety of both Thai and Western, and the chef always comes out to make sure you enjoyed it all. Made me feel like I was back home with my mom. Nine's got a bundle of adventuring booklets and makes you do your homework (though she helps you out a lot as well), and it's pretty easy to find the right tour for you. Not to mention that by staying at the Green Tulip, you get a great discount on everything that you do -- whether it be going to the jungle or watching a Thai boxing match, it's always cheaper booking through them. I just can't say enough. It's a great deal, not that expensive, good food, amazing people -- everyone I saw there was happy to be at home in the Green Tulip. And the best part is, you're in Chiang Mai, which has got to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Enjoy everyone.  , Canada / Seoul, South Korea ()
5  This place is the best place I have stayed! It is brand new with lovely rooms and bathrooms, a terrace, and a rooftop. The hostel is a little bit of a walk from the night market but in a nice part of town. The owners are the kindest people you will meet, and they are full of info about where to go and what to do. The food is fab too, we ate there everyday except when we did the cookery course, when we were too full! I would recommend this place to anyone as it is so nice.  , Ireland ()
