The Hostelz.com Review
St. Kilda Beach House Hostel for sure is a place for party animals to go. It's located in a very quiet town as there's not many shops. But this also makes them like a hot spot in St. Kilda, as they have a popular bar there. The staff are very friendly and make you feel comfortable to be staying there.
The Location
The hostel is located at the corner of Barkly Street. It's not exactly as it's name says which is in front of the beach but takes around five to ten minutes to walk to the St Kilda Beach and Pier. You can find many bars, cafes, and shops along Acland Street, Fitzroy Street, and Chapel Street. The Luna Park is just right there in front of the beach. Tram 16 or 96 can take you to the city. It takes around ten minutes for you to go to Carlisle Street where you can find supermarkets, shops, and cafes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
They have double rooms, four- to six-bed dorms, and eight-bed mixed or female dorms and every dorm has a clean shower. Lockers are provided in the dorms. It's not too bright in the dorm, with only one light. All rooms are accessed through secure smart card system when you get in.
Common Spaces
This is a brand new hostel after its redevelopment with a grand bar on the top floor so that you can get to know some more people. You can go outside of the terrace, which is a smoking section, to view St. Kilda. There's a bar also on the ground floor with a pool table. They have a continental breakfast including happy hour every night. And there's a karaoke night on every Sunday. The kitchen is generally quite clean with a TV inside. They don't have wireless here, but an internet room with seven computers, but most of the time only two or three are working. Besides is a corner with sofas and TV so you can enjoy your movie time.
Summary
You will find yourself enjoying it here if you like drinking and partying. The atmosphere is goo, especially on the karaoke night. You can get to know some people here hanging around.

Brilliant! I stayed at Hotel Barkly (St Kilda Beach House) in a 10 bed dorm for 4 months and i seriously had the best 4 months ever. All the people in the hostel were brilliant and the staff were so helpful, friendly, and would do anything to help.
The rooms are exactly what you want, the bathrooms are spacious and nicely decorated. There are computers in the kitchen where you can access internet. There is no drinking aloud in the rooms but they have a bar downstairs which is well priced and the food is very reasonable for what you get! There is quite a bit going on for the backpackers during the week like quiz nights, industry nights, karoke and a nightclub downstairs which holds "Ladies Night" every thursday, and theres always drink deals too!! — Donna , England (2009-12-22)
Shaite This hostel is absolute sh*t. The staff are very rude and unprofessional, the beds are uncomfortable, and there is no other common area expect for the bar where you have to spend money. The kitchen is dirty and small. The small TV room got changed into a dorm, so now the only TV is in the kitchen. Only good things about this hostel are the location (five minutes from beach, coles, shops) and that the bar is quite reasonably priced and relaxed. — Nora , Finland (2009-12-14)
Pros: Near St Kilda Beach
Cons: Thieves staying at hostel stealing guests valuables, making alot of noise 24/7 and attacking guests
This hostel is frankly dangerous to stay at and you could very likely have your stuff stolen as happened to me-the long term "guests" stole my alarm clock and shoes.
After I checked into this hostel, I was put in a 10 bed room. After being up all night I was interested in getting some rest. Unfortunately, one of the other "guests" was blasting his boom box at me with no regard for me trying to sleep.
When I then tried to get some sleep that night, the regulars in the room came in drunk about 3am and decided to play cards all night and yell and scream even though they could see I and other guests were trying to sleep.
I asked them nicely to take their game to the lounge so we could get some sleep and they ignored me and laughed about it.
They then bragged that they drove out some female guests the week before by keeping them up all night with their drunken yelling and harassment.
When I told them their behavior was very disrespectful and not particularly funny, they began threatening me physically.
I asked the night staff to throw them out for making threats and keeping several guests up all night. The staff refused to do anything but agreed to get my bags out so I could gert out of the hostel. As the staff got my bags out(I decided not to go back into the room because of the five drunk guys threatening to attack me) they "guests" in the room laughed that they were going to "pee on my bag".
They didnt do that but I did discover later that they stole my alarm clock and one of my shoes-apparently their idea of being funny.
As it was about 3am I was force to stay up all night and the management refused to refund my money or evict drunk, dangerous "guests" that are thieves.
They also claimed they couldn't find my key deposit when I returned my key.
Even though they claim the place is "renovated" it was also extremely hot, with very small kitchen and reception, not to mention extremely rude management there. — Steve (2007-03-20)
