The Hostelz.com Review
The Rainbow Hostel offers reasonable accommodation with a variety of choices to suit all budgets. You can camp outside, sleep in a dorm, or opt for a private room. It's located a little out of the way, but offers a free shuttle.
The Location
The Rainbow Hostel is located about a mile from the center of town. If you are arriving by bus -- the only form of public transportation to Dingle -- a hostel shuttle will pick you up for free. It's easy to spot, as it parks right in front of where the bus will drop you off and has "Rainbow Hostel" plastered across the side. You can also use this shuttle to get into town during your stay as long as you coordinate with the arrival time of the inbound buses. If you miss the shuttle, the walk is only about around twenty minutes, depending on how heavy your pack is. If you're walking in the dark, a flashlight would be useful to mark your presence on the road as there are no sidewalks on the narrow roads and the Irish tend to drive like they're late for everything.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are relatively bright and are offered in a variety of sizes to suit all. In addition to the dorm rooms there are a few private rooms, including a large family room. The private rooms offer locking doors, but the security is more sparse when it comes to the dorm rooms with no lockers. The bathrooms receive regular attention from the staff and overall seem clean. The private rooms do not offer en-suite facilities, so you are required to share the small shower room with the other hostelers. The showers provide nice hot water with no timer or coins required, however, little space has been allocated to allow one to change without performing a balancing act while you dry off and get dressed in the same cubicle you just showered in with one hook and no shelves.
Common Spaces
Rainbow offers one large multipurpose room that acts as the kitchen, dining room, and lounge. There is no TV to distract you from the beautiful Irish landscape outside or the international travelers inside. The kitchen is not unlike most other hostels with pots and pans you would expect when camping. The kitchen and lounge area only have one dim light, which can make it difficult to cook and more importantly clean up afterwords. The common space is somewhat dreary and does nothing to help engage an interesting evening to meet new friends. Free Wi-Fi is available, or you can pay to use their computer.
Summary
Rainbow Hostel is clean, well priced, and located in one of the most beautiful areas in Ireland. It's not too big or too small, and overall it's a great place to visit.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

Wonderful So wonderful that we went in May 2007 and returned for another stay at the end of September. Michael and Scott were very helpful (even if I did keep calling Scott "Doug" for some reason -- probably an excess of Guinness!). A great place to make new friends, very clean -- altogether brilliant and recommended by a couple who always hostel when we travel. — Tony and Vikki , UK (2008-03-07)

Great atmosphere and loads of fun fantastic kitchen with loads of character! the cleanest hostel l have ever been in. the staff are amazing. micheal and emma are very helpful and friendly. and scott from melbourne is inspiring and hilarious. free shuttle bus into town and no curfew. thanks so much rainbow hostel. — pAUL , australia (2007-09-06)

Friendly, Helpful, Fun My wife and I stayed here in 1999. We camped in the grounds (we were on a camping trip to Ireland) and really enjoyed it. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The shuttle to and from Dingle was handy, but we walked the mile as often as not. It didn't seem overly noisy to us, but I suppose it depends what you are looking for. We will definitely be staying again next time we visit Ireland. — Zwack & Irish_Eyes , British & American (2007-06-25)

Great kitchen and hot showers that don't stop every thirty seconds although the flickering fluorescent light makes for a dark stall. Emma was really nice, but Micheal with the ponytail lacks a number of social skills. Sleeping is periodically interrupted by slamming doors and the fiddling of old fashioned keys that are hard to turn. A shuttle van will take you from the bus stop by the Super-Valu out to the picturesque countryside where the hostel sits surrounded by rolling hills and sheep! Internet (slow speed) is provided for a fee, but only if staff is around. Use the internet places in the village (fifteen-minute walk) for better value and connection. Overall a nice stay. — Brad & Leila (2006-06-25)

This is the best hostel I have ever been. I've met beautiful people there and I can easily say that the few months I lived there are among the most amazing months of my life, thanks to all the people I met there. — Paulina Vázquez (2006-05-14)

As a regular visitor to the hostel I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. Nice rooms, well kept, very clean and very friendly and accommodating staff. The main kitchen area is spacious and has a turf fire, which adds character. — PeterMoore (2006-02-15)

What an interesting place. Atmosphere is terrific. No wonder they have long term guests. One told me he came for a week and has been there years. About a mile from town. If thats too far then you could stay in a hotel and miss a great experience. Don't expect "yessir, no sir" from the staff. Its not the Hyatt. It is immaculate, comfortable and friendly and affordable. Will go back there for sure. — Sean O' Casey (2006-01-25)

This place is great — friendly staff, clean, great social atmosphere, and they really helped me out when the Grapevine Hostel totally screwed me out of the reservation I had made weeks in advance and confirmed. The only downside really is its distance from town, which honestly can be a bit of a hassle. But, on the other hand, staying outside of town like that can be a blessing, too — all you have to do is step right outside the door and you're basically staring at a real-life post card. This is the Ireland from movies and TV that most people want to see anyway. — Jonathan, USA (2005-09-13)

It was extremely noisy at night, not suitable for anyone who wants a good night's sleep!! — Eil (2005-08-02)

Very nice, laid-back hostel in a fabulous setting. It's close to town but has a very rural feel, with great Irish landscape right outside the door. The people are friendly, the facilities clean and convenient, and the atmosphere great. You can rent bikes, do laundry (costs a bit, but they do it for you), cook, read, walk, pet the cats . . . whatever. My first hostel ever, and a good one. — Jessie, USA (2005-07-11)

This hostel is super clean and the staff and people were cool. If you're driving, make sure you get back early because the parking lot fills up quick, and I'm not sure where they put cars once it's full. — Craig (2004-10-17)

The staff were wonderful and so friendly. They even waited for my friend, who got carsick on the bus ride into town, to give her a ride to the hostel. You can get rides into town on the shuttle. The mix between longer-staying residents and weekenders makes this a perfect place! The country setting was picturesque! — Emily (2004-10-14)

This place had wonderful rooms, a nice kitchen and very friendly staff. I loved staying here and I will come back!!! — Christel (2004-10-07)
Good points: decent beds, room size, and kitchen. Bad points: rude staff, long walk, disorganized check in & out, bunkbeds without stairs, dangerous walk at night, bathrooms packed due to the mass of campers, no breakfast, and below average facilities. Summary: Stay elsewhere. — BC (2004-09-08)

It's a bit of a short hike from the center of town, but worth it. They'll come pick you up from the bus stop and drop your bags off, too. Most of the staff were friendly, but the older woman could be quite rude. It was neat to see the camper commune in the front yard, too. — Anonymous (2004-07-12)
