The Hostelz.com Review
Hostel Bakfark is located in the building of a college and is open only at New Year and in July and August. It is situated not far from the Moskva Ter (Square) and within ten minutes' walk from the castle district. To get there from the railway station you should take the red line metro to Moszkva Ter. This summer there was some reconstruction, so you have to get by metro to Astoria station and then take the bus M2B to Moszkva ter. There are more buses that go to Moszkva ter from the centre.
The hostel is not very popular, so there are always free beds. There are two floors and about fifteen rooms (dorms only). Each room has got two floors -- there are three beds upstairs and three downstairs. The rooms are quite spacious, but also very dirty. The beds and furniture (a couple of tables and wardrobes) are old. The good point is that you can switch on/off the light either upstairs or downstairs. There are also showers and toilets in the hostel -- ladies' showers and toilets are on the second floor and mens' are on the first. So, before you check in, think on which floor to stay. There is also a library (used as a common room), a kitchen (with no cutlery or dishes), a fridge (in the separate room), a luggage room (no charge), and a garden.
The staff is neither friendly nor hostile -- they will answer all your questions (their English skills aren't perfect though) and that's it. If you don't ask them where you can find your room or this or that facility you'll have to look for it yourself. When you check in be ready to give them your passport (or some other ID), and you'll get it back only when you check out. Hostel staff provides you with the bed sheets, but they don't give towels even for rent.
All in all, Bakfark is not the best place to stay in Budapest, especially if you expect to meet new people or to have a party – this is not the hostel for you. But if you want to have a quiet night and don't expect luxurious rooms, this hostel becomes an option. You should also remember that if you have no place to stay, here you can always find a bed.

Decent locale -- had a lot of fun I went on an excursion to Budapest from a summer language institute in Germany. I stayed at Bakfark with a friend of mine. This was back in 1998. I don't remember anything great about the hostel but I did have a very good time with the people I met there. If you're not spoiled and don't require a lot of amenities but want a cheap place to stay in a wonderful city, this is the place for you! The location is decent but not excellent. — Matty Breckles , American (2007-06-09)

we have been in bakfark in the summer of 2005. it's a great hostel very beatifully located, with a great outdoor bar in front of the hostel. The staff is very friendly and are enthusiastic to tell you the best places in town. if you're lucky they will even take you there. you have to be a little bit lucky with your room. We prefered the rooms on the street side. the cooking facilities could be a litlle better too. But we loved this place and are coming back this year. — jeroen en rick (2006-08-05)

Nice hostel, nice girls. i've been there in summer during a rainy week and this hostel has been very good. nice rooms, but not nice baths. however i could use it. — Franz (2005-12-24)
The hostel was called Hostel Bakfark. That should tell you what type of place it was. The rooms were fine, but I guess Hungary has a law saying that hostel bathrooms should not be cleaned and that Lysol should never be sprayed to get rid of any previous stenches. Marie and I definitely would not go back to bakfark because the bathrooms reeked of pee, there were no paper towels or regular towels, there were no shower curtains, and the shower drains smelled like a sewer. — Anonymous (2003-07-14)
