The Hostelz.com Review
If you are looking for the coziest hostel in the world, HI - STF Uppsala City Hostel & Hotel/Kvarntorget is not it. This hostel is a functional hostel with a strong and very helpful support staff, but you will not be writing to friends and loved ones about how wonderful it is. The word that describes it the best is convenient.
The Location
Located only a seven-minute walk from the Central Train Station and a five minute walk from the new Culture and Music House, the hostel is convenient for most of Uppsala. A small grocery store is located around the corner in the same building and a small reasonably priced (by Swedish standards) restaurant is located on the other side of the building. A larger grocery store, with a larger selection and better hours, is located a short walk away. A bus stop is located a block from the hostel and the hostel is located at the end a pedestrian pathway to the center.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are clean and well sized and each has a desk. The hostel has eighty beds in thirty different rooms (though the majority of those beds are classified as "hotel" rooms). Each room is named after a street address rather than just a room number. Only the hotel section of the hostel has rooms with bathrooms located within the room. Bathrooms are located in the middle and the ends of the hostel.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is small and not very useful for groups of people more than about four. It would be perfect if it were just you and perhaps a friend. They are currently going through a renovation that is addressing this problem. The TV room is located in the hotel section. In order to get there, you must first walk by all the hotel rooms. Also located in the hotel section on the first floor is a large seating area. The hostel was very calm. One nice thing is that you can connect to the hostel's wireless internet for free!
Summary
Overall it is a positive experience staying at this hostel. It is convenient and serves its purpose. Getting a room at the hostel is usually not a problem, but there can be exceptions -- last of April, July during the music festival, last weeks in August, and all of September. The staff are very friendly and willing to help.
