Sleepy Lion Hostel, Youth Hotel & Apartments Leipzig

Video's Review

Sleepy Lion Hostel, Youth Hotel & Apartments is more reminiscent of a hotel or bed and breakfast rather than a typical hostel. Most of the guests are families, and because of this, the atmosphere is not incredibly social and if you're traveling alone, it is hard to meet people. This being said, however, the facilities are clean and comfortable.

The Location

Sleepy Lion is in a great location to explore Leipzig -- it is only a ten-minute walk from the central train station and this walk is not difficult. If arriving by bus from one of the surrounding cities it is also easy to reach the hostel. Leipzig is not very big so the hostel is close to the town centre and all the main tourist attractions. The area surrounding it, much like most of Leipzig, feels safe and is generally quiet during the night.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The shared rooms in this hostel are spacious and clean; they are split into smaller rooms rather than one huge dorm room. The ten-bed dorm, for example, has two bunk beds in the first room, then two in another, and then a smaller room with just one bunk bed. Every person has his or her own locker, which just requires a padlock. The rooms feel secure, as each guest is given a key card, which is also needed to gain entry into the hostel. The beds are bunk beds and have decent mattresses which are quite comfortable. Each room has an en suite, which is modern, clean, and spacious; it is one more likely to be found in a hotel. Although it is great to have an en suite, the only issue is when sharing a room with nine other people, and everyone wants to use the facilities at the same time, it means a lot of waiting around.

Common Spaces

There are sofas near the reception and an outdoor patio with two tables mostly used by people who want to smoke. The main common area is where breakfast is served in the morning (for an additional fee). It has many long tables and chairs and a small tea kitchen with fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. Despite not being a proper kitchen, it is well equipped with cutlery and bowls and plates.

This hostel is great for a stopover of one night. It does not have not a typical hostel environment, but because of this, it offers a little more comfort than a usual hostel.

Good location
Stayed at this hostel for 3 nights and enjoyed it very much. The location is very central to the city centre and walkable. Hostel is very secure and just in short distance of the Hauptbahnhof. I would easily recommend this hostel as a good base in Leipzig to make day trips to the surrounding areas.
Nice hostel in the downtown
big & comfortable dormitory with speedy wifi network, close to train station & city centre.

This hostel was great, very clean, big rooms, hot showers for each room, and the people was very nice with me. If i were to go to Leipzig again, I would come back to this excellent hostel.
very nice hostel, however when there was an incident of one of the roommates stealing from one another the staff did never show serious interest. Never heard back from them.
I absolutely enjoyed the stay in this cozy hostel. It is clean and I felt so at home — a wonderful sleep, nice and friendly people and a comfortable common area together with the homey feel of the wooden staircase. I liked it very much!
Beautiful showers, clean rooms, helpful staff, a great location in a cool old building, good stuff!
The Hostel Sleepy Lion is a 10 minute walk from the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof main railway station (although in summer 2004 there were a lot of roadworks and diversions in the area, making the walk a little longer). It's located in a renovated old house close to the bars and restaurants on Barfussgasschen and Markt, the main square, and is easy to find. The building has a nice feel – and the facilities are better than what you would expect to find in the old east Germany. The hostel overall is quite laid back with friendly staff and generally friendly guests. It is open 24 hours – which is especially convenient if you want to make the best of Leipzig's legendary nightlife. The dorm rooms are kept clean, and the décor is different from the usual with unusual painted walls and flags of various nations everywhere. The ensuite bathroom is huge, kept spotlessly clean and the showers have reliably hot water all the time. The common room is big, with windows facing onto the street and has a bar (with cheap drinks), comfy lounges, table-soccer, and internet access. There is also a smallish beer garden outside in which people can relax in the sun.

The staff is so friendly, and the breakfasts are pretty good!
