Fantastic. Everything you could ask for. Easily better than the Old Mill, Abbeywood is a very inviting, "homey" hostel with an absolute wonder of an owner. She was an absolute sweetheart to everyone, made fresh bread every night for breakfast in the morning, and helped me and my sister get around town, organize taxis, trains. Forget the Old MIll Hostel and it's dungeon-like atmosphere, the Abbeywood is one of the best hostels around thanks to a warm, inviting glow, and a wonderful owner. 100% recommend to anyone staying in Westport. Ask the locals for directions, as it's a few blocks from the town centre and tucked away from the road a bit. For a marker, it's right next to Holy Trinity Church, if you follow Bridge Street across the river from the city centre. — Shaymus , Minnesota, USA (2008-08-23)

Abbeywood was an excellent hostel!!! Spotlessly clean, a 2-3 min walk to the center of Westport, and very friendly. Excellent breakfast. — Dan the Man (2005-08-19)

Abbeywood was so good to us. I cannot thank them enough for all the help they gave us. They went far beyond the call of duty to make our stay exactly what we needed. The hostel is nice and clean and close to town. Neil was running the front desk when we were there and he HAS to be the nicest and friendliest guy in the world! I would highly recommend this hostel. — Rachel (2005-07-04)

If you have kids, this is the place to stay. This is one of the quietest hostels we have ever stayed at. I've stayed at hostels where there are quiet hours set but never enforced. Abbeywood is different. There are strict rules about noise levels that are enforced. Susan is an exceptional host. The whole place is kept in top order. It is a short walk to town yet set back a bit so there is a place for kids to run around and play. — Anonymous (2005-06-14)

Forget the other hostels, go here – you'll see the difference. We can actually have a good rest in this hostel. — Alain Gauthier (2004-08-13)

I'm just back from a wonderful weekend in Westport. We stayed in an amazing hostel there, Abbeywood. Its about 3 minutes walk from the town centre but you feel like you are in the middle of the countryside. It is set in lovely mature gardens which separate it from the town. It's a converted monastery and it still has a lot of the original features which add to its charm. It also has an eclectic mix of antique furniture so it doesn't have the clinical feeling of hotels. You also get a great breakfast included in the price: homemade brown bread(yum), cereal, coffee/tea, juice. Susan, the girl who runs it, is really friendly, helpful, and relaxed. I have stayed in a lot of hostels in Ireland and this makes a refreshing change. The beds are really comfortable and the place is spotless too. Also if you are not into the whole dorm thing and want a bit of privacy, they offer rooms with 2, 3, or 4 beds. — Margaret Ann (Dublin) (2004-05-04)

A great place to stay close to the centre of Westport. Clean, warm and welcoming, we cannot recommend it highly enough. We really liked the freshly baked bread and coffee for breakfast every day! — John and Kate (2004-02-24)

Lovely place to stay, super close to everything... was very clean and the facilities were cool... super good surfing! — Anonymous (2004-01-31)

The hostel was very clean and the staff were friendly. The rooms were great, with the basic requirements and the beds were even comfortable! It's a 2 minute walk into town and I would stay there again the next time I'm in Westport. Thanks Susan, it was wonderful!! — Tony Angelosante (2004-01-20)

A pleasure to stay at. Nothing more to say really. Well I lie, there is loads to say but not enough time to say it. The Abbeywood was in a past life home to some Christian Brothers that taught in the area. Susan the new owner has transformed this building into a place that anyone would be glad to stay in. This place has character and when I say character I don't mean broken down shower and ducks running around the dinning room character. Far from it, this hostel is very well equiped but it also has a relaxing feel to it. Susan and Neil, the two people\staff that I met during my stay were great. Friendly, approachable and the kind of people that I would gladly go to the pub with for a pint. Fact is, we did. There are other places to stay in the area, all of which are up to scratch but in my opinion. The Abbeywood has something special, maybe it's the fact that its more personal than the usual "thanks for your money, goodnight" approach. It's more along the lines of "thanks for your money, see you down town for a pint" or "I'm going surfing in the morning if you want to do something" approach. Would I recommend it, You bet! Will I be back, you bet! Will I be writting another rave review, I'd bet on it. — NN (2003-08-22)

We stayed in the ground floor family room at Abbeywood, a former monastic manor house with an unassuming façade and large windows. Our room was comfortable, clean room and with such high ceilings I wonder if the monks levitated to higher planes. It was an easy walk to Westport. But book ahead as the town fills up on the weekend. Westport reminded me of Miami, Florida on spring break - tank tops, mini skirts and the human sap of young libidos. Overflowing Irish pubs played classic and not so classic Irish music. It assured me that James Joyce's Ireland is still alive. In the morning we all tasted Susan's (the friendly manager) homemade brown bread - the best we had in all of Ireland. - Mary Ann Proctor, Bainbridge Island, WA, USA. — Mary Proctor (2003-06-10)
