The Hostelz.com Review
Location is probably the biggest asset of this hostel. It is directly across the street from Hoare Abbey and is at the foot of the Rock of Cashel, making for easy access to the main attractions in town. It's slightly out of town (about a 5 minute walk), which also makes for a very peaceful night's sleep, without imposing a long walk home from the local pubs. This is a small town, and the location is well-marked by tourist signs, so it's easy to find.
With only four rooms (one dorm and three private rooms), this hostel is small and intimate, however you shouldn't expect a lot of personal attention. After check-in, guests are generally left to their own devices, which is a plus for the independent-types. The hostel is housed in a converted stable-type building which is approximately 200 years old and located directly next to the owner's house. Reception is inside the house, and while the family are happy to answer questions, you will rarely see them in the hostel.
The rooms are very spacious and clean, including the bathroom, and all of the kitchen appliances are in good working order. The common room is very comfortable, and is a great place to spend a rainy afternoon or a quiet morning. Breakfast is not included, but the kitchen is well equipped and there are grocery stores nearby. Because of its size, O'Brien's doesn't have the institutional feel of the bigger hostels – this is a wonderful and restful place to stay. There isn't a party atmosphere here, but then, everyone needs a rest once in a while...

THIS IS IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN We discovered this place back in 2007 and thought it was great and this year we returned bringing our adult daughter and her friend and it was even better with further renovations having been done. We traveled the UK and Ireland for 4 months and the lodge was the best we stayed in ... it is so luxurious and tastefully decorated -- excellent value for money and can't wait to return. — Neary Family , New Zealand (2011-11-16)

Wow what a place! This is by far the best hostel I stayed in while in Ireland -- mind you it is in my top ten around the world (would have made the top five if they had a beach!). We had a warm welcome from the O'Brien's and the rooms were lovely and clean with matching bedding (not so common in Ireland), clean bathrooms, and a large kitchen/lounge with a cozy fire! The views when you wake up is nice bonus! Sadly we only got to stay for one night but would love to go back and send a day or two in the friendly town. I left my Cannon battery there, but they got my number from the visitors book, called me up, and posted it back to me. now that is going the extra mile without expecting something back. — Elizna Krog , South African (2009-11-28)

Superb! I stayed with my wife for two nights in a twin. 60 Euro a night for an at least three-star-quality room is unbeatable. The site of the place is ace! The room was superb, kitchen was nice. If you are around, do go there. Met many friendly people there, a couple from GB took us all the way from there to Kenmare in their Camper. — Stefan , Germoney (2007-08-09)

Excellent! It was the best hostel we stayed in when we were traveling in ireland! Family atmosphere, beautiful view to rock of cashel and hoare abbey. Good price for the room, very clean, small village with interesting churches, heritage information centre, and best soft-ice-cream ever! It was so amazing and fantastic sitting in that old ruin of Hoare Abby watching the sun goes down. We loved it and we'll be back again. — Nicole , germany (2007-06-13)

Our family stayed with the O'Briens for a couple of nights in April. We loved our stay! With three children to consider we could not have picked a better place to stay. The lodge is beautiful and clean. The location can't be beat with The Rock of Cashel across the street and Hore Abbey across the field. This was a favorite of the whole family and we plan on coming again. We have also told friends we have the perfect place to stay when in Tipperary. I also picked up a wonderful book on Ireland with many beautiful pictures and to our surprise there was a picture that had The Rock of Cashel, Hore Abbey, and O'Briens Lodge in the backdrop. People's jaws dropped when we showed them and the picture captures the beauty of the surroundings! — McLaughlin Family , Delaware, USA (2007-05-18)

I stayed here with my daughter and her fiance in March, and we were completely thrilled with O'Brien's. The spectacular views alone would make it a world-class hostel, but everything else about the place made our stay memorable -- the comfort, the hospitality, the cleanliness, and even the lambs! Just make sure you have enough film or space on your camera when you stay here because you will have extraordinary photo opportunities! — Kathleen Ruane , Irish (2007-04-20)

My husband and I stayed here in March and loved it. The newly renovated private rooms are lovely with a gorgeous ensuite bathroom and comfy bed. You can't beat the location -- right across the street from two spectacular ruins and only five minutes walk from downtown. It also feels a bit rural because it's right next to a field with grazing animals. Very peaceful and quiet. Our absolute favorite hostel of the entire trip. — Jamie (2006-03-27)

This is the best hostel in Ireland. I've stayed here at every opportunity and in lots of ways, whether I've been travelling alone or by myself, whether travelling by car or by cycling, I've stayed in the hostel many times and can't fault the accommodation or the friendly atmosphere and the same is true of the camping facilities. It's within comfortable staggering distance of one of the most interesting towns in Ireland, some of the best bars, and at night has the best view of the rock just by raising your eyes. I hope to be there again this year. — errol (2005-07-24)

This one is a warm and welcoming place. The fireplace inside is great and makes you feel home. Beds are cozy, the bath is clean, and next to the house is Hore Abbey — a fantastic and mysterious little ruin. Don't miss this wonderful spot. — Sue (2005-07-22)

This was a great place to stay - very small and intimate, and with a fabulous location. This is a hostel where the splurge of a private room is well worth it, because you really do get a lot more... the private bathroom and cozy bed are more like a high-end B&B than a hostel. The only downside to this hostel is that the family who runs it don't seem to be too interested in talking to guests, and the 'reception' area is in their house. Fortunately, Cashel is a small place, so I had no trouble finding my way around. — Jen, Canada (2005-06-16)

This is one of the best hostels in Ireland, and I've been to many of them. I return here every time I'm in-country. The family is welcoming and friendly. Everything is clean, neat and quiet. It's just beneath the Rock of Cashel and right across the street from Hore Abbey. It feels like you are in the country, even though it is only a five-minute walk into town. This is MUCH better than the hostel in downtown Cashel. Check this place out if you are in the area. The hostel makes you want to make a longer stay in Cashel. — Brian Read (2005-06-14)

Great place. I return here every year!!! — Marc (2005-04-22)

Great place, a godsend to the weary traveller. — Anonymous (2003-08-23)
