The Hostelz.com Review
Spicythai Backpackers is a funky, pseudo-upscale, suburban residential neighborhood home converted to and resembling something more like a fraternity or sorority house than yuppie mansion. With that said, it is comfortable, spacious, and a homey escape from the more traditional backpackers located in old city Chiang Mai.
The Location
Found at the end of a cul-de-sac of an upscale neighborhood resembling something out of 1940s America, the hostel is located northwest of old city Chiang Mai, and is a long walk from the old town, and it's a task locating the hostel’s actual whereabouts. However, once found, accommodation is splendidly backpackerish, with pizza parties and rucksacks. Unfortunately, because of the distance from Chiang Mai proper, a taxi/tuk-tuk ride is an almost certainty. However, do not be alarmed, because within walking distance is a sprawl of trendy clubs/bars/cafes/restaurants to drain the pocketbook of serious backpackers, while others will delight in updating their Facebook statuses.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are mixed-sex, double bunks and female only with air condition. One of the two mixed dorms is located on the ground floor. There are lockers provided in the rooms, so bring a standard-sized lock. Beds are comfortable and clean, but expect to see gear and clothing strewn about the room, as many travelers tend to make Spicythai Backpackers a week-plus accommodation due to the homey feeling of the hostel. Bathrooms are clean and showers are spacious. Water pressure is low, while hot water is plenty.
Common Spaces
There is a limited kitchen for guest use, as well as refrigerator with a nearby dining table and chairs. As for entertainment, a large HDTV is center stage and cozy for movie night, every night with comfy couches encircling. Up on the roof are clear views of the nearby mountains and surrounding neighborhood. Two internet computers are free to use and Wi-Fi is available. Breakfast is complimentary and includes instant coffee, tea, cereal, milk, and toast and butter.
The house is open and airy in the mist of Chiang Mai’s suburbia, and it is a nice reprieve from the hustle of city living. The hostel is possibly too quiet, but that's a good reason for hitting the town with fellow travelers looking to escape themselves and all that Thai suburbia has to offer. Street parking is available.
Summary
Spicythai Backpackers is a comfy place -- a balance between "Animal House" and "Revenge of the Nerds." This hostel is well organized and a fair value for A/C accommodation, but a bit far removed from walking attractions, meaning transportation will be an additional cost. Still, for something different and something more up-city as backpackers go, Spicythai is a welcomed retreat, even if it's merely the 'burbs.
