The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Killarney International, Co Kerry Hostel is located about three miles out of Killarney. While the directions provided by the hostel may seem vague, they are very effective and make sense when you drive the route (the orange house is very orange). Supposedly there are free buses to and from the hostel in peak tourist seasons, but otherwise this is a difficult place to get to without a car. There is plenty of room to park at no extra cost on the hostel grounds. Not too far from the hostel are the Ross Castle and Muchross lake/village. If you need additional information, the visitor's center in Killarney is second to none.

This may be the most stunning hostel we've ever seen. The grounds are extensive and beautiful. The building itself is immense. It looks like an old estate and it's difficult not to feel like aristocracy as you drive up the long winding driveway, through the grounds to the hostel. The reception area is just inside the entrance and is manned constantly by someone friendly and knowledgeable.

While the dining room was huge with floor to ceiling windows, the kitchen was way too small for capacity of this hostel. The kitchen did have hot and cold water dispensers which is really convenient for filling up water bottles or making a cup of tea. If you are going to cook, try doing so before the main dinner rush. Breakfast is available for an extra price, which seems really expensive considering you get only toast, cereal, a tiny glass of juice, an apple (fruit), and one cup of tea or coffee. There are also candy machines if that is your choice of nutrition.

The bedrooms are large with big windows and sturdy beds. The doors lock automatically and can be unlocked using an electronic key card obtained at reception upon checking in. This added security is greatly appreciated in such a bustling hostel. The bedding and sheets are available at no extra cost. The bathrooms are separated into male and female bathrooms, each with three shower stalls, two toilets, and some sinks for washing up. There is no hand soap provided for washing hands after going to the bathroom, so be prepared with your own!

There are two sitting rooms equipped with immense windows, comfortable couches, a piano for the musically inclined, fireplaces, and televisions. There are two computers with internet available for a cost. Pay phones are also available in the hostel. The hostel is locked after 11 p.m. but your key card will give you access after that time -- just make sure you have it with you! Not only is this hostel stunning, it is clean and comfortable too, which makes for a very pleasant stay in Killarney.

We went to this hostel twice and the second time we stayed for 2 months! Most of the staff are friendly, and the rooms and bathrooms are clean. There is a full size kitchen that can serve a small army. Unfortunately it is quite a walk from town — 30 minutes. Probably the best way there is by taxi or thumb. The woods behind the mansion are great. The price is one of, if not the lowest in Killarney. When we left they didn't have Internet but they were planning on having it by this summer.

I gave this an average rating because the advantages and disadvantages equal out. We stayed in a 12-bed dorm that would be a little bother if full, but the room was still huge and, compared to other hostels we stayed at, could be called spacious. It has a disadvantage of being a ways outside of town. A bus, car, or hitchhiking is a must to get there, but the bus does stop at the end of the road. Nice and quiet for a good night's sleep and it is out in nature, not in the city. Common rooms are big and they serve meals there also. Staff were friendly and helpful. Hope this helps someone.
