Kells Hostel is a quiet and slightly rundown hostel, which seemed very empty during our stay in August. However, the staff are friendly and helpful and for the price we weren't expecting anything more. Other hostels in Dublin cost almost three times as much and pretty much have the same quality!
The hostel is situated about ten minutes' walk from the main Bus Eireann bus stop in the village center and is just across the road from a large supermarket in a quiet residential area on the main road through Kells (N3).
We stayed in a private twin room -- a very small room with a bunk bed and a private bathroom. Again the facilities are very basic and quite old -- the beds in particular are quite old and uncomfortable, but for one night it is fine. The locks on the doors are adequate and the bathroom is basic but ok. The room is quite clean -- though we are not overly fussy and have come to expect less in most hostels. The hostel is not smoky and all areas seem neat and tidy.
The hostel has two quite large common areas with books and TV. We only saw one older man here during our very short stay here -- the place is very empty and not really somewhere you would hang out or meet other people. The kitchen is very large with plenty of facilities to cook your own food though we did not use it. There are no laundry facilities.
This place is quiet and a bit rundown but very cheap -- especially when compared to the other alternatives in Kells (mainly hotels and B&Bs). We were here for a wedding, so it suited our needs -- we would recommend it to anyone who wants very budget accommodation in the area, so long as they aren't too fussy. The staff are nice and there is no curfew, so apart from the uncomfortable beds, we have no complaints for the price.
