HI - Lisdoonvarna - Sleepzone The Burren Hostel is well established hostel which caters to large tour groups mostly and many outdoor enthusiasts. It is clean with spacious facilities.
Breakfast consists of tea and coffee and there is instant hot water available.
The Location
The bus comes almost to the front door of this hostel. There are a decent enough number of buses running this route which makes it accessible if you are used to using the bus system and are not traveling for the first time. However, if coming from long distances, make sure you know the bus times. There are no trains to this location. There are about fifteen parking spaces but there is also room directly across the street if the initial parking is full.
There is no shortage of information and maps for the local area. The Burren, a great trail for hiking and biking, is right near this hostel and bike rentals are available. The hostel will call on your request and a bike from Doolin (six kilometers away) will be delivered. However, for those willing to walk and save a few euros, another hostel located in Doolin rents bike for cheaper.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Ensuite dorm rooms and private rooms are available. Rooms are spacious with closet cabinet and small dresser plus in-room hairdryer for female dorms. There is a mirror in both room and bathroom which makes for easier dressing when there is a full room/dorm. The bathroom has both shower and bathtub, hooks to hang clothes, and shower shelves. There is plenty of space in the bathroom. Sink has hot and cold faucets, not a single faucet. Laundry service is available for a fee. But towels and adapters are lent for free.
Common Spaces
This hostel has a common area called the bar that includes tables for games, benches, chairs, and pool table. It is a very comfortable environment, but if traveling in a small group, the larger tours can completely take over the TV room. They have a small but decent selection of movies, but only enough for four or five people to watch TV. The room includes fireplace and bookshelves with guides and some literature books.
The kitchen is a little awkward, with two sections separated by a hall and the walk-in refrigerator. There is also a pantry for dry goods. In the back kitchen section is all the silverware, dishes, and cooking pots. Also the washing sinks (both of them) are located back there. The front section has another bigger gas stove but it is in the corner and makes for limited use, even with the six burners. The microwave and food preparation sink is in there are as well. The dining area is a large room with lots of seating and is always well lit by the many windows. It is a pleasant place to dine, even when the tour groups are in town.
Wi-Fi is free and a code is given to guests. There is one computer for guests that do not have their own capacity to use the Wi-Fi. Someone is usually using the computer but the couches situated next to this single computer station allow a line. This can get old very fast when tours with younger adults or teens do not pay attention the courtesy time limit.
Summary
This is a pleasant place to bring a tour group. If you are a smaller group or traveling alone, it can being a bit overwhelming when the place is full -- especially during meals, the kitchen is a daunting endeavor as there is a limited number of cooking pots. There are several of pubs and restaurants within a few minutes walking which serve food and have good music, including traditional Irish music.
