The Hostelz.com Review
Bohemia Central Accommodation is pretty average. It doesn't offer anything special -- a place to sleep and a bar downstairs. The atmosphere is quiet and almost lethargic. There doesn't seem to be much going on. Even during the busy season the whole place seems empty.

The Location

Bohemia Central is located in Cairns CBD, halfway between the Centrepoint shopping mall and the Esplanade. The location is good but not excellent. There are many hostels in this area and Bohemia Central happens to be an old house with poor insulation, so one can hear the traffic all day long. It's within minutes' walk away from the mall, supermarkets, and waterfront and close to the train station.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Bohemia Central offers singles, twins, and doubles as well as four- and six-bed dorms. Rooms are very plain and the whole building consists of at least three different houses. The older parts are noisy, the walls are thin -- you can hear both the neighbours and the outside traffic, which is annoying. The rooms have only beds (no lockers) and don't seem to be very clean. Bathrooms are a little bit better, although they are scattered all over the three houses.

Common Spaces

The common spaces include TV room, kitchen, pool, bar, cafe, and joint internet area/reception. In the evening you can purchase an meal from the bar downstairs or try cooking yourself. The kitchen is tiny and ill-equipped. A deposit is required for cutlery and there are only two fridges for all guests.

The TV room isn't very enticing either. Mostly people are either on the sunbeds by the pool after a night out or drinking more at the bar. During the low season reception/cafe area is open only in the mornings and evenings. The reception acts also as a travel agency.

Summary

Bohemia Central is thirteen in a dozen. The promotional pictures depict the two areas in the building that have been recently renovated and the rest is rundown. Dorm rooms are certainly not worth the money, kitchen isn't really suitable for cooking -- lacking in space, crockery, and facilities -- and the lack of common space for daytime activities make it difficult to get to know other people. Good for emergencies if you can't find anything else, but we wouldn't return here.
