The Hostelz.com Review
One can be forgiven for thinking Daisetsuzan Shirakabaso is the wrong place. This large, beautiful, wood-paneled building with an attatched log cabin is an extremely nice and relaxing hostel, and a great place to base yourself for hikes in Daisetsuzan and to Asahi Mountain.
The bus from the front of Asahikawa city bus station drops you off right in front of the hostel. It costs about a thousand yen each way and there are five departures daily, the last being around five p.m.
The hostel includes a very small tax for using the onsen, but this is well worth it. There is an onsen on premises with a very nice outdoor bath (rotenburo). Watch your footing. The onsen is available most of the day.
Hot barley tea is available free at all times. Bathrooms are plenty and clean. Laundry is available downstairs. There are two nice common rooms, one near the front and the other in the log cabin at the end of the hall, the latter of which has a TV and lots of books and manga.
Meals are quite good, with dinner being an absolute must. It includes a wide variety and good quantity of meats, vegetables, fish, salads, and miso soup. There also aren't many other restaurants around, so if this is the only choice it's certainly not a bad one.
The biggest advantage of the hostel is its location. It is right next to some good trailheads and a short walk from the Ropeway which takes you to some of the finer spots in the national park.
