The Hostelz.com Review
Jailhouse Accommodation is such a fun hostel to stay at. It's practically brand new -- it was a working jail up until 1999, but then about a year or so ago it was totally revamped and turned into a hostel. It still feels very much like a jail inside when you walk in, only it is friendlier, cleaner, and quieter than we'd expect any jail to be.

There is a great TV room with a large selection of DVDs to watch. There is a patio area at the front gate of the hostel when you first walk in -- on a nice day you'll find a lot of people outside here, enjoying the weather. The staff is extremely helpful and always easy to locate, as there is a button at the check-in desk where you can page the manager anytime of the day if no one is at the desk and someone will come help you.

The rooms are great -- extremely clean! We stayed in a ten-person room with a bathroom attached to it. The bathroom looks like it hasn't been renovated since jail times. It is extremely dark and not fancy at all -- we guess that's the look they were aiming for. The communal bathrooms are much more up to date and the toilets are by far the coolest toilets we've ever seen (they have barbed wire in them for the jail look). Also, it really feels like a jail when you look outside your window and see rows and rows of barbed wire. It's fun to tell your friends and family that you spent the night in jail!

The atmosphere is great -- they have extremely friendly staff and many backpackers from all over. Make sure you take a picture at the front gate, which still looks very much like a jail from the front. Also, be sure to notice all the signs around the hostel with jail humor (including, if you don't check out on time, you'll be sent to jail).

Quirky and fun, but a long way from town and with a kind of cliquey feel. When we were there, admittedly in Winter, it was cold and our twin room was very small. Women's bathroom was ankle deep in water for more than twelve hours.

Awesome
this was so cool to stay in. i stayed in a room with four beds and there was my two brothers, anton from sweden, and i. the toilets were funny -- they had barbwire in the seat! i would stay here any day -- it's like a backpackers.

Fun place to stay in Christchurch
We were attracted to this hostel by all of the good comments above. Our booking went missing when we got there, but they managed to get us other type of rooms. We found bigger shared rooms to be far better than double rooms (with bunk) which are too small (real jail cells) to feel comfy. We thought this place was more suitable for younger group as you need to walk up/down stairway for toilet and shower. Also it is further away from the city centre, so you need a bike or public bus for the central actions. Lastly, the amenity is excellent. We found the mattress and linen to be the best of our stay in NZ. All should try at least once!

Oh my god! This is the best hostel ever. It was my first in New Zealand and I just hope the rest live up to this standard! The beds truly are amazing. Best night's sleep I've had away from home. The staff are so helpful and friendly. The kitchen is well-equipped and spotless, even providing free tea and coffee. The common rooms are so nice, you could laze here all day! You'd be a fool not to stay here when you're in Christchurch.

Unlike many other hostels, Jailhouse Accommodation felt like home! After we (two friends and myself) had been traveling for hours and arrived at this hostel at nearly 1:30 a.m. (no telling what it was in our time) the staff was so cheerful and helped us out a lot! They went above and beyond their call of duty! Which is refreshing compared to many other hostels where you can't expect that at all. And the beds! Oh, the beds are fantabulous! We slept in our car for a week before coming back to this hostel -- only to save money or else I would have gladly laid down the cash. But the whole week we fantasized about laying our traveling heads on these hostel beds. Everything is very clean and newly refurbished. I had a great stay and if I'm ever on that side of the world again, I'll be sure to stop in for an excellent night's sleep. Thankyou for raising the bar for hostels!

A great alternative to raucous hostels where you can't escape the noise from the bar. The decor is clean, modern and brand new and the owners are friendly and care about your stay. The experience of staying in real cells (as apposed to backpacker dorms which merely seem like cells!) and the history attached to the building makes this a unique option for the more discerning traveler. The hostel is out of the city centre but on the bus route and close to the botanic gardens and other attractions. I fully recommend this place as the perfect complement to a beautiful city. A big thank you to Grant and Kirsty.
