The Hostelz.com Review
Disguised yet accessible, Katowice’s first hostel -- Slazaczei -- is located in what one might mistake for a factory. From the Katowice Central Station (PKP), one has to go straight out the main exit of the station (on the second floor) and across the bridge and square to the nearest street heading north (as straight ahead as possible). It is the main shopping street and slightly to your right when coming from the main exit. Continue walking, you will pass McDonald’s. Continue as far as the street goes and runs into Albert Supermarket and Rossman Drugstore.

Go left here and continue on to the bus station. Airport buses run by WizzAir stop here as well as long distance and regional routes. From the Bus station head west (past bus platform 9) at the corner you will find yourself on ul. Sokolska. Head right (north) about a block where you will find a pedestrian subway next to a small park. Take it under ul. Sokolska. As you exit you will see a gated compound with a small Hostelling International sign. Enter this compound and fallow the road straight back past the first building until you get the passage where you can enter a courtyard. The entrance to the hostel is directly (diagonally) across this green.

The hostel is in some sort of technical school. It resembles an empty Soviet hospital. The rooms’ décor is kept to a minimum, yet one will notices that some effort was taken. The rooms are doubles that are rented dorm style -- lone travelers will end up in a room with a stranger. Bathrooms are communal and single-sex. There are no further facilities.

Nearby one will find many cashpoints, small stores, and large roads as well as some eateries. The staff speaks extremely limited English. Expect to write everything down and get yelled at a bit in Polish. Rooms are secure as the whole place is in a gated compound) and each double has its own lock. The compound gate closes at 10 p.m. There is no way to return or check-in after that time. Checkout is by 10 a.m. Linen can be rented for an extra fee.

This hostel has much character because it does have some rough edges and is very different than most modern European hostels.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
3  Very basic, but clean and friendly The hostel is very basic. Don't expect anything like a TV or internet, as you would find in a lot of hostels these days. The room I stayed in had a nice size (three beds, no bunk beds, table with chairs in the middle, clothing closet). There is a kitchen and you can use the fridge. Overall, the whole place was well kept and clean. The staff is friendly but hardly speaks any English. This was a shame, because they were not able to give me any information on Katowice or how to get around. However, I did get a reply in English to my e-mail when I made my reservation. The hostel is very well situated only minutes away from the train station and even less than that from the bus station which is pretty much across the street. The instructions on how to get to the hostel are great. I got there without any problems and without needing a map. And you have to be back in the hostel before 10 p.m. I got the impression that it is also used by students who study at the school grounds where the hostel is located. But even though there was one other tourist when I was staying there (mid September) they let me have a three-bed room to myself, which was great. All in all this hostel is especially well suited if you are on a tight budget, if you are traveling with friends (so you have a room to yourself for very little money), or if you really need to get some sleep. I didn't mind that the hostel is very basic, but the 10 p.m. curfew does limit your options when visiting Katowice.  , The Netherlands ()
