The Hostelz.com Review
Located in an area close to the main bus stop and full of cheap accommodation options, Abraham House doesn't stand out until you check in. The hostel is very easy to find and only a ten-minute, leisurely walk to O'Connell Street.

With rooms ranging from a private double room to sixteen-bed dormitories, you have a lot to choose from. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom, which is very clean despite the sometimes-funky smell -- the lack of any real ventilation causes the mustiness. Our eight-bed dorm had plenty of natural light and ventilation (except in the bathroom), comfortable bunk beds, and enough space for everyone's backpacks.

Located in an typical old house, Abraham House is actually two connected houses, four-stories high including the basement. There is no lift. In the basement you will find a completely equipped (and clean) kitchen and plenty of seating space for you to enjoy your meal or to watch TV. On the ground floor is the reception, packed with pamphlets about the local area, phones for calling internationally, computers with internet access (for which they charge), and some rooms.

As you head up the stairs you will find rooms at every landing. Halfway up the first flight of steps you can connect to the next building, which houses several private rooms. Continue up to the first floor for the dormitories. This repeats for the next floor. At each landing you will find great little mini-lounge areas, perfect for chilling and chatting in a small group.

Great hostel! Very clean, and excellent location. Secure as there is a key for the room, and safety deposit boxes available for rent. There is also always someone working at the front desk. Kitchen has many supplies. Breakfast was just a bagel, coffee, and juice, but was free, so can't complain! Our room was on the fourth floor and there is no elevator, so it was quite the workout, but our room was clean and bright. Bathroom is cleaned daily by the staff, and was by far the cleanest one out of all of the hostels I have stayed in. Would come back here again.

I was in this hostel a few years ago. it was alright then. But this year (spring 2006) the place was rotten. the toilets were disgusting (we went to the next pub instead), the sink was out of the wall, the showers were filthy, staff was unfriendly. I'll never go there again.

I have been in this hostel only four nights and I think I won't remember it as the best hostel I have ever been in but not even the worst. It's ten minutes walk to city centre, and really near to Connolly station and to the central bus station (this is a realy great convenience!). So this is an hostel where you can calmly stay in. Negatives include entry only by buzzing and showing ID, which sounds ok, except half the time I was ignored!

This is the sort of hostel, which is generally ok, but in such a mediocre way that you only remember what was wrong! Good price and location, not much more. Pros: — Good location close to Busarus, major sights and Temple Bar. — Dorms are some of the cheaper options in Dublin. — One of the blokes at reception (older Irish guy) was really friendly and helpful. Cons: — Dodgy, dodgy shower with only unbearably hot water and a door that didn't close properly. — About five flights of stairs to get to the topmost room, and not too well lit at night. — Entry only by buzzing and showing ID, which sounds ok, except half the time I was ignored!

I was not too impressed with this hostel. It's very noisy (bring earplugs!), breakfast is a joke (one old croissant), and my friends' room smelled. It's not as dirty as other hostels I've seen.

I stayed there in February with a few friends and had a great time. I played in pool competitions organized by the evening staff to raise money for the tsunami appeal. The staff were very accommodating. I have to say though, that the kitchen could be better stocked, but overall the facilities were exactly what I paid for. Budget accommodation in a friendly setting. I would recommend it to anyone.

Positives: the big dorms are relatively cheap, the kitchen is social, the daytime receptionists are professional, and the kitchen and cleaning staff are nice. Negatives: the duvet covers are not changed between guests, creaky bunk beds, dorms of all sizes are noisy, there's often no water in the large upstairs dorms on weekends, the fridge is too small, the kitchen is under equipped, and the evening receptionists have no concept of customer service and can become aggressive if you disagree with them.

The weekday receptionists are professional, but the evening staff are friendly until you disagree with them. They not only have no concept of customer service, but they can also turn really aggressive. For example, I stayed there for two weeks. On the day I checked out, I was told I could store my bags in the luggage room until I left for the airport at 10 p.m. that same evening. I came back to the hostel around 5 p.m. and asked Trish if I could join my friends in the kitchen for the evening. She told me that I couldn't go into the hostel since I had already checked out. That was kind of a drag, but understandable. I then asked her if I could go see if one of my friends was in his room (so that I could tell them I was waiting in the lobby) and she gave me a point blank "no." I believe that a stranger coming in off the street looking for a friend would probably have received better service. I had to send another guest into the hostel to tell my friends that I was in the lobby. At 8 p.m., when I asked Decklin if I could go in to use the bathroom, he told me "no, this is not a public building and to go to the bar on the corner." And Trish implied that I couldn't use the toilet because I had been telling my friends what had happened. The way I see it, one takes care of guests, especially those that have given you their business for two weeks, even up to the time they go to the airport. Especially when all they want is to contact their friends and to use the bathroom.

What doesn't make this hostel stand out is that there are three or four hostels neighboring it, giving you many choices. It is not particularly clean nor secure. I still met good people here and enjoyed myself. It's cheap and will get the job done.

Overall, this was a nice hostel. There was some city noise, and our first night in the large dorm wasn't great: we were on the top floor, and the bathroom door didn't close. The next night we got a four-bed dorm for only two euros more, and it was much nicer. The price is very affordable anyway, and breakfast was free. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect for getting around the city or to the Busaras (bus station) and train station. Overall, I give it 3 1/2 stars. It was better than average for a city hostel, and the price was a bargain.

We only stayed one night, but the place was clean and comfortable. It was quite a circuitous walk to our room, but we got there. The breakfast was lame, in my opinion -- a croissant, coffee and juice -- but it was free, so I didn't complain. The staff was really, really friendly. I'd stay here again.

Excellent location! It's barely a ten minute walk from Temple Bar and maybe 15 minutes to Croke Park to watch the Gaelic Games. To get to your room, you have to walk through a labyrinth and my room ABSOLUTELY REEKED!!! It was dank and musty. The well-pressured shower didn't drain quickly, so the water spilled out onto the bathroom floor. This was not good with three blokes in the room (and a temporarily acquired local girl). The small balcony served as a handy place to have an opening beer and the T.V. was handy to while away a Guinness hangover.

The carpet in our room (G1, in the basement) was wet, so our room stunk. The taps spurted water out, and the shower overflowed. It was cheap. It's good for a budget, but if you can afford to pay more, go somewhere else!

I stayed here a few years ago. The staff are NOT friendly, and the guy on reception when I was there was aggressive and unhelpful. The atmosphere of the place is a joke, and their 'breakfast' consisted of tap water (!) and a stale roll (nothing in the roll).

Overall, I was quite impressed with Abraham House. The hostel itself is a bit shabby, but clean. The linens seemed well-worn, but not dirty. The shower and sink made noises on and off, and the water pressure was wacky, but I had a nice hot shower every night I was there. The kitchen was okay--not well equipped, but I found what I needed to have in order to make myself meals. I didn't have any problems with noise from outside or within the building. The staff was friendly and seemed genuine and welcoming. The location is great, and I felt very safe. This place is not crowded or busy, so anyone who didn't belong in the hostel would be obvious to the staff. Breakfast was very hostel-standard, and for the price, I was happy for anything. I reserved a 16-bed room, and was put in a 10-bed room for the same price, which was a pleasant surprise. The big dorm rooms are the best value you're going to find in this city. For the price, this place was great. If you want what this hostel lacks, you'd be paying three times as much. I'd recommend this place to anyone trying to travel cheaply, and would definitely stay there again.
